Picked up a good to very good condition 1950 vintage Winny 1894 in 32 WS. I need to find an elevator for the rear sight. The bluing is probably 90% with thin areas around the receiver where you would hold it and where the elevator was. No rust. Stock with the usual dings and dents. Rifling is sharp and no rust or pitting. Action is still a little stiff but likely from gummed up oils. Gonna clean it and redo the stock as a project. May send it off for replacement of a few buggered up screws and a re blue. (Goodsteel, let me know if you do this type of work). I guess I could just keep it as is for a shooter. Can't wait to get her to the range.

Anyone with mold suggestions to be used as plinkers? Any tips on finding an elevator and new screws? Tips on stock refinishing especially getting dents out or filling them?

Accurate Moulds makes 170 -180 gr moulds that are made to order for the 32 Win. Special, 10 grs of Unique shoots point of aim and very accurate in my 1956 Whinny.Fabulous moulds,I like brass the best but he offers aluminum, cast iron as well.

Great find. Found one myself a few months back and am happy with the purchase! Can't do much better inho. Action is stiff on mine as well even after a complete dissembly and cleaning.

As for molds the rcbs 32-170 is a fine choice.

Sounds nice! I like the Accurate 323-170A but my 32's are a bit older with tight throats. I'd only preserve the finish on a 90% gun but as noted above, it's your gun. The cool part about the 32 Spl is that it can go quite a bit faster than most 30-30's, especially with a gas check. The 32 has a slower, CB-friendly twist rate and 2100 fps is easily achieved with the right alloy and a gas check. Enjoy, sounds like a sweet little carbine!

Thanks guys. Pictures to come down the road once I get the camera working again on my iPhone. I guess I'll do a general clean and get an elevator and shoot her some. I have one accurate mold that is a double cavity with one 30/30 and another 32 special cavity. It's 323170A. I'll have to cast some of those up for the time being and load some. I have IMR4227. Any load suggestions with that powder. That or TrailBoss? I don't have any unique. I need to find some.

You can bring some dents out in stocks by wetting a wash cloth and placing it over the dent, and then take a clothes iron an apply heat to the cloth/dent area.

I put a Williams peep sight on mine, helped my old eyes a lot. Lever powder works best for hunting loads in my 1955 model.

Good find Osteodoc. I have a Model 64 rifle of the same vintage in 32 Special and find it easy to load for. Any of the moderate burning powders should do well for you with top end loads and I've used boolits from 170 grains up to 197 grains with success in mine. I've not tried the LeverEvolution powder, but it is recommended by knowledgeable shooters of the calibre.

Is your carbine drilled and tapped for an aperture sight like the Williams, Redfield or Lyman sights? If so, they are a good option and may help you shoot it a bit better. Mine caries a Lyman Model 66 on it and it is helpful when changing from one load to another.

My Model 64 with the Lyman sight and a Merritt disk adjustable aperture.

Nice shooting Sharf. I'm not at home right now but I don't recall it being drilled and tapped for an apeture sight. I've got some LeverRevolition powder sitting on the shelf. Just wanting some plinker loads for now though.

It was about 1953 that the side of the receiver had 2 extra holes drilled for an aperture sight. My pre-64 is a 30-30 but about 10 grains unique works very well with a Lyman 170 grain cast bullet and a aluminum gas check for about 1500 FPS. I am shooting it all the way out to 200 yards. Very cheap to shoot and fun. About the recoil of a .357 fired from a rifle. No one complains about recoil.

I came across an attic find mid Fifties Model 94 in 32 WS. Mine was a rusted mess. Came with a good peep setup. Dirt cheap price.

I got it functional and cleaned up best I could. Replaced magazine tube and springs.

I'm using a Lyman 323470 that I had for 8mm. Sized 0.323" they chamber and shoot great. Love the slower twist of 32 WS.

Just wanting some plinker loads for now though.

An inexpensive, but accurate plinking load that's good out to a hundred yards or so is:

170 grain plain base boolit over 6.0 grains of Bullseye powder.

Av. 1101 fps, ES 17, Sd 6.2 for 10 shots.

Accuracy is 2 MOA out of my Model 64 (with aperture sight) out to a hundred yards or so. Trajectory really falls off after that.

For plinking, I have an old Lyman 321232 mold (I think designed for the .32-40) which shoots nicely in front of 9 grains of Unique. I use the NOE 325-180 FP for hunting and it works well.

My plinker load for 30WCF and 32SPL is 14-16 grs 2400 under a 160-180 gr boolit. Now that I finally have Unique again I'll try some of the loads I've read about around here. If the screw heads can't be cleaned up by peening, filing and cold blue new ones can be obtained from Brownells or Homestead.

I've got plenty of 2400 so will need to give it a try.
