This morning, on the last day of the season, my son got his first antlered deer. He had missed chances twice this season because he didn't want to get out of bed, so we made it count today. It isn't the big one he was looking for, but he is happy with his 6 pointer. I thought it was a 4 point because I couldn't see the brow tines til we went to drag it out of the woods. He didn't have much time to make the shot as the buck was walking toward some thick stuff and the shot was a bit back hitting liver and stomach. But it all worked out. We watched the buck run about 30 yards before piling up. The gun is a 1939 Izhevsk 91/30 with a 2x7 pistol scope. Load is a Hornday .310 123gr SST over 50ish gr of IMR 4895. Found the bullet under the hide on opposite side. Kind of surprised it didn't exit but it did dump a lot of energy as evidence by the soup inside the animal. Shot was about 50 yards and the deer was probably 200lbs live weight. We will mount the skull and he wants it in his bedroom.

Well good deal! There has often been some magic in the last day for me. Often in the last minutes of the last day.

Man, that's great stuff there!
Tell the young man "Well Done" and congrats on your success. I'll bet he will be a bit more eager to get out of bed the next time!

Great job!

It is indeed a magical moment when a father get to be there when his child takes their first deer. I was fortunate enough to be there with both my sons took their first deer and I nor they will ever forget that experience. My dad was with me when I took my first deer 22 years ago, I can't remember my second deer but I still remember every little event of that magical afternoon. Precious moments indeed.

you might want to ask him about the recoil of the rifle.
I don't look forward to touching off 50grs of anything in a 30 caliber rifle.
when the girls were about that size they were working on about 30 grs of 4895.

Congratulations to your son on his first buck! Your bullet looks a lot better than mine. Harvested a yearling this morning154495. It was my first reload deer kill154495. It was a 150 gr. Hornady SP Interlock .308 Winchester charged with 44 gr. of IMR4895. The bullet velocity should be less than 2700 fps. Range was over 100 yards. When I field dressed the deer I recovered the bullet. It had expanded to .40 but only weighed 37 gr. I thought a soft point might be more consistent than an SST Bullet. Any advice on hunting reloads? Are you satisfied with the performance of SST bullets or anything else from Hornady?

This load is not to bad recoil wise. 150gr or better bullets are stout

I guess it did the job but I wasn't impressed with the penetration. I have some. 312 150gr SSTS from Grafs that I haven't loaded yet that I have high hopes for

Are you satisfied with the performance of SST bullets or anything else from Hornady?Your load is almost identical to what I use in my M1A. I load 43.5/Imr4895 and the Hornady 150 gr SST, and it chronographs 2737 fps using Remington .308 brass and 2793 fps using WW mil-spec Nato 7.62 x 51 brass out of my rifle. Super accurate load.

The 150gr. SST .308 bullet has performed great for me on deer. Never recovered one in the animal. Don't give up on your load for the .308, it is a very good load. Shoot more deer with it and see how it works.

I can't count the deer I have killed with the Hornady 7mm 154gr Spire point in my 7mm magnum over nearly 40 years of hunting. Great bullet.

I double checked and it was 47gr IMR 4895. Book says 2700fps. Recoil is not too bad. Similar to reduced recoil factory loads for 308 or 06

Great job! The load my youngest sone used his first few years was a 125 grain bullet in front of 37 grains of H4895 in a .308 as recommended in the Hogdon youth loads. Accurate and killed deer quite well, recoil is very mild.

Great job !!! Be sure to always build him up. Not that many kids get to hunt. And of that, less actually get to bring home the meat.

Pat him on the back for me.

Got the Skull all cleaned up and made a plaque for it out of a piece of oak. Beveled the edges, sanded, stained, and polurethaned and it looks pretty good. He's got it hanging in his bedroom and is very proud of it.
