I have a question. I hate the rear sight of this rifle and decided to get a peep sight for it. So i got a redfield hunter peep sight. Never had one of these before. My question is as i tried to mock it up it appears i need to notch my stock. Is this correct or did i get the wrong sight. I don't want to hack up this stock.

Yep, got to notch the stock for it!

This is a 1903 Springfield, but a Mauser has to have the same cut out for a receiver sight.

Ahh , looks like i will have to find a different type of peep sight. Rifle is pretty nice and all matching except bolt. Maybe i should use this sight on a 6.5 jap parts lot i have. Someone cut down the barrel took maybe 6" off. And cut the stock down. Maybe this would be a better use for this sight.

Here is my Mauser 98 (35 Whelen) with a Redfield Model 70 sight. Lyman Models 48 and 57 should also work on your Mauser rifle, but alas, you'll probably have to cut a small notch in the stock. Does the Redfield Hunter peep sight require you to drill and tap the action for the sight? If so, you really shouldn't worry about a notch in the stock.

Krallstar,
For the Redfield peep, you'll have to notch for the peep base. And depending on the thickness of your stock and the zero of your loads, you may also have to notch for the elevation arm as well.

BTW: Williams peeps have the same screw spacing as Redfields but the offset on the bases are different.

Scharfschuetze,
Nice metal work finish on your rifle, I like the spoon handle bolt. What kind of finish did you use?

Scharfschuetze, is that rifle parkerized? Butterknife clears that aperture?

Thought I caught a whiff of linseed oil when I saw the photo. But I'm in Seattle so maybe I was really smelling it.

Rather than drill the receiver and notch the stock why not buy a scout scope mount that replaces the rear sight leaf? No drilling or notching required and can switch the gun back to original in a few minutes. S&K and B-square probably have the mount.

Here's an other option that leaves a relic intact. (no drilling)

I've never used one. So this is not a recommendation, just an alternative.

A friend runs a Mojo on his Swede. He seems to do well with it.

Williams also makes a $25 peep sight (WM-96 Peep) that uses a military Mauser sight base.

IIRC (it's been a LONG time), the Williams 5D-JEMS (Jap, Enfield, Mauser & Springfield) receiver peep sight doesn't require notching the stock.

Scharfschuetze, is that rifle parkerized?

The gunsmith that did the metal work no longer can rust blue or parkerize due to the EPA and some of their inane dicta. The finish is a light sand blast and then some kind of protective metal finish that I no longer remember the name of. It came out blacker than I wanted, but... oh well.

The bolt barely clears the aperture, but unfortunately, I can't use one of my preferred Merritt variable diopeter eyepieces due to the very close tolerance between the bolt handle and the eye piece.

And yes, linseed oil rules on walnut. I think that I might polish out the bolt handle to its natural metal sometime this winter.

I really like the look of these old Redfield sights. I think it would look almost correct. But now that i have the sight i am finding it hard to make the jump and disfigure this rifle. Don't really like the looks of the mojo but it might be the only way to get a peep sight on. I have seen some pics of a peep sight were the safety goes. That would work if i could find one. But i do have a 6.5 jap box o parts that i wouldn't feel bad about modding.

I have seen the sight that goes on the part of the bolt and the one I looked thru had a little play in it. Don't know if they are all this way or not.

A bolt mounted aperture sigh in the rigby style makes a very good sight. I have one on my DWM 1908 7x57

Von Gruff,

Nice looking sight on that Mauser.

Do you notice any issue with increased lock time in off hand shooting with the added weight on the striker?

Von Gruff

The aperture dia is just right for shooting and has accounted for goats to over 180yds so far and the lock time is hardly compromised as far as practical hunting/shooting is concerned. The guy in the US who was making them is no longer doing so due to work commitments (or so I have heard).
There is another chap on Mauser Central who I have given all the measurements to and is working on doing something very similar.

That photo makes my skin crawl of the rifle sitting on a masonry wall. A very beautiful rifle. ( Too beautiful to sit on a masonry wall )

Or maybe this one (soft nosed cast bullet at 2400fps shot at 180yds)

Ben,

Beautiful gun. What twist is your 280Rem barrel?

I've never checked it, it was a factory Remington 700 barrel that was cut, re-threaded, and fitted to my SR - 98 Mauser action.
