Don't know how many of you are fans of the 1911 but it looks like we might have a chance now to get surplus ones from CMP one day

This is certainly good news but I will believe it when I see them for sale.

The problem with it is this. By federal law, they can only sell .22 and .30 caliber firearms. The federal government will have to amend those laws to include .45 caliber arms. The bill that passed does NOT have the language written into it to change this part of the deal.

Everything I've read, which is all conjecture, has these priced unrealistically. If they cost what a new R1 costs it makes no sense to buy one. These are most likely mismatched rattle traps. Maybe it's just me but I see little collector value in them. I've been wrong before but it's not like no one is currently producing 1911s.

If that is what they are going to be selling they can keep them, will have to wait and see what CMP has them for sale at and what they say they are

Since WE taxpayers already paid for them once I feel every vet that has EVER handled one in training or on duty should pay no more than what they were worth when that vet handled one.

What say you?[smilie=s:

Also this will be the first time handguns will be sold by thru the cmp or dcm. Parts have been sold rifles, cases and ammo never handguns though. Im curious to see how it will work out and procedures ( Im with in an hour or so of cmp north store at Camp Perry), acessories and parts you pay for and can take with you. Rifles normally are shipped to your home fed ex. Will the 1911s be the same? or will they need to be shipped to dealer and the transfer fees added? Most of these may also wear the property of US army navey or marines on the slides , ( my model 52 that was purchased thru cmp has it on the front reciever ring). There may be alot of hoops to jump thru with these pistols to purchase. On the plus side alot could be very early manufacturer and some may even be the rarer manufactures contracted during wartime. Maybe an ithica or singer will turn up for me to buy cheap.

When I purchased mine #184xxx (back in 1963-4) from a friend, he said he purchased it from DCM where it was gone over to assure its function and safety.

No it will never win a beauty contest but it definitely says "BEEN THERE DONE THAT".

Never had a problem with any of my CB loads.

Let you younkers fight over these new ones.:bigsmyl2:

Pretty sure they sold 1911's before. I have a friend who bought one from the DCM in the 60's

In the 50's and 60's DCM sold 1911 and Lugers. I believe they sold others as well but I am not as certain on that.

I'll just hope they pop up down here at the CMP. If the price structure maxes out at $1200 for a mighty fine specimen, down to $500 for a rattle trap, then I'll pick up a few.

I honestly expect 50% of the ones purchased by people to be on Gunbroker within 48 hours of receipt.

Bought a 1911 from them in the 50s, paid $25 as I recall.

If it ever comes to pass that CMP can offer these you can rest assured that anything that is all original (not re-arsenaled or refinished) will be at premium prices. Anything from US&S or the ultra-rare Singers will go on auction for top dollar.

In the current market even a mismatched rearsenaled M1911A-1 will bring pretty high prices anyway, so I don't expect to see any bargains from CMP. Only 100,000 pistols (of 6 or 7 million produced) won't make more than a temporary ripple in the collector market.

As I read it the law says the secretary Can authorize sale. Not must. Obama will head off sales IMHO.

The link in post 3 is from August. The original link in post 1 is from last week. I believe it's only a matter of time before they hit the market.
Hopefully they will be for sale within a couple months. I'm sure they will be priced competively - - $1,000 plus or minus depending on condition. Since they are limited to only selling 10,000 per year it will be interesting to see how quickly they go through the first batch.
I saw a video somewhere else where the CMP Chief Operating Officer stated the requirements will be slightly different from rifles and that they will have to go through FFL's due to certain states laws.

I'd actually like to get one just for the markings and build it into an "old school" gun like I have now. My Father...who really wasn't a shooter..... had his issued gun. My one Uncle wanted a 45 so he told my Father that he would trade him a Ruger single six 22 for it.....sounds like a good deal right?......This happened when I was younger but was done with the understanding that should he ever decided to get rid of it I got it. Well....somewhere along the line the Uncle needed money and it got sold without us ever knowing. It's the only gun that ever got away from me that I regret not getting.
