View Full Version : Critique new proposed shop layout: Mill, and how to handle hand tools

I'm rearranging my shop. I want all my metal chips to be consolidated for cleaning. Bonus to get my three heavy wood dust producing machines close together too. (right now the miter saw is across the shop)

Here's what I got on paper:

The mill and lathe move to the upper right corner. The lathe headstock opens into the shop in case I turn a rifle barrel.

But the mill is sandwiched in between an old kitchen pantry cabinet (8 feet tall) and my gun safe (taller than the mill table). The mill bench is 50" wide, probably have to cut it to 48" to fit. This means there is just enough space to run the mill table all the way to each side (benchtop SIEG X3), but I can't overhang the mill table by much or else I will contact the pantry or gunsafe.

To date, I have never milled stock long enough to cause a problem. But Tomorrow is another day and another project I never saw coming.

do YOU see an issue with the mill table location?

-------------

Second question, do you see an issue with tool storage? the "island" to the lower right looks like an afterthought to me. Just a pile of bandsaws, drillpresses, and grinders with the rolling tool cabinets plunked there for good measure. seems messy. Any way to clean up?

my mill is an X3, looks like the one on the left

that table is about 48 inches wide. My mill has an extended table

which gives it about 40 inches of total reach when run each way, give or take.
