I have a rolling block in .38-55 with a 12" twist barrel that I want to buy a mold for. I have been using a Lee 250 grain but would like to get something from NOE or Accurate. I have done a lot of reading and I know a heavy boolit needs a fast twist barrel but does a fast twist barrel need a heavy boolit? Will a 250 grain shoot as well as a 300 grain or heavier? The furthest I am likely to be shooting is 200 yards. The barrel slugs .377 and will easily chamber a .380 boolit in long Starline brass seated well out. Thanks - Dan

Interesting question.
I have a 1:18 twist Rolling block 38-55, bore .379 and casting a 265gn .381 run through a custom lee sizing die of .380.
Still conducting load development but I'm curious as to what weight projectile "should" work in this twist rate.

My J.H. Taylor (Uberti) Highwall also has 1-18 and my 'best load' to date uses a 304-grainer from an old NEI mould. Mould originally dropped about 330 gr. boolits and holes in paper showed signs of keyholing at 100M. I had Buckshot shorten the mould by milling off the top of the blocks to remove the gascheck shank and "SHAZAM!"

11 shots @ 100M, iron sights - 2.0" C-T-C. (I called the low flyer at 6 o'clock and put an 'insurance' round into the target.)

The 330 grain spritzer from Lyman is a keeper, if the size matches up with your barrel.

If you mean this one: http://www.lymanproducts.com/lyman/bullet-casting/mould-details-rifles.php?entryID=61 I am very tempted but fear it might run a little small.

I have the lymann 335 grn 38 cal it casts out around .378 with 20-1 and does shoot well. A buddy is using the 312 rcbs bullet and its doing very well for him also. With a 12 twist I would look for something 300 + grains, and also a bore riding nose that fits the bore well. WHere the heavy bullets shine is at the longer ranges the lighter bullets just dont seem to carry as well.

Go to BACO and look at the .378 Elliptical bullet at 365 grains, in my 38-56 it cleans rams like nobodys business. mine is also a 1;12 twist on a CPA.

Having a small win with my 38-55 RB.
Started me load development after sizing to 380.
18gns AR2207.
Will try 20gns on the weekend after I cast some more.
