Well, I know if I point it at something, it's going to die. Perfect bullet performance.

Not much snow for November.

I hope I get a chance to 'verify' your statement about the 358 again later this year. I passed up a doe under my stand on opening morning. With a NE Season's Choice permit, only six more weekends of deer season.(don't tell the Mrs) Happy Thanksgiving, Flyer

I hunted a Savage '99 in .358 last year. Unfortunately, it was a bad year for me and deer hunting and the only one I got was a doe right at the ragged edge of things, but the .358 in that package is as close to the perfect deer rifle as I've found, at least for the conditions and methods I deer hunt.

Very easy round to get good cast performance out of. I'd be curious as to the load used as well.

The bullet is a 260 gr. from Mountain Molds. The powder is WC852F, 42 gr. It will shoot under an inch at a hundred yards, if you can hold well.

Well done!

Do you have one of those game ear things that acts as earplugs over a certain noise level in your ears? If you do, how do you like it and which one is it?

very nice score
I shoot the 358 as well and use a 260 gr. Mountain Molds boolit as well
killed deer and elk with rather ease with the cartridge can't understand
it's lack of popularity but oh well their loss
have a good one

Good morning and Congratulations !
One fine caliber to get to be "Ho Hum" about ! That confidence is a fine one to hunt with. And now "supper time".

No, actually I listen to the radio a lot of times when I'm hunting!

"Congratulations! Please tell more about the rifle. "

It's one I built. I cut the stock to the old Serengeti Hunter design. I had the barrel made at the old Bauska Rifle Barrels shop by Steve Williams. It's octagon, with integral front sight ramp, 1-14. FN Mauser action, Timney trigger.

Understated excellence all the way. Solid choices top to bottom. (BTW, I love the pewter forend tip.)
Congratulations.
358 Winchester is hard to beat.

Now I have a question if you'll permit me: Have you throated that rifle to accept that long bullet, or do you just seat with the GC in the case? Your comment of "WC852F 42 gr." has me curious.

Yes, I throated it so it would accept the Bator Heavy without seating below the neck. This bullet is of course a bit shorter, but works fine.
The WC 852 F was powder Jeff Bartlett had several years ago, no idea if it is still available. H380 data is pretty close.

I forgot to say I did a Winchester M70 type safety conversion on the rifle.

Congrats on a nice buck and sweet rifle. I was surprised to see you shooting a "modern" rifle. Thought all you hunted with were rock-fired smoke poles shooting patched round balls? Guess not. ;-)

Well, the picture doesn't show it, but there was a driving snow going on at the time. Looked like a good cartridge gun day. I do have a B tag I will be using either the flinter or a pistol for this weekend, as the area is ML, pistol, shotgun only.

Looks good Ric! Never got the 358 Win bug but been in love with the Whelen for two plus decades now.

Nice deer, beautiful rifle and an awesome cartridge. 35 caliber slugs are indeed rather boring in their efficiency, second only (and just barely!)to big 45-70 slugs. There's something about big heavy boolits that deer find irresistible. ;-)

Way to go Ric! .35 Whelen's little brother strikes again!
