If you have read the shotgun forum you've probably seen info about
our 585 HE, in the 12ga FH thread. And in the projects thread
It is 3.27" long belted case that shoots all kinds of bullets,
from solids to jacketed to hard lead to .585 Minie bullets.

Well we got experimenters cutting the 585 HE to about 2.17", about 45-70
length,to test, and if those interested can use in bigger lever guns, that come
45-70. The 45-70 rim is .608", base about .500", and our rim and belt is .654", but
base is .634", 60% bigger cross section .A third bigger section than 50 Alaskan.
with .553" base, put in same type of lever guns.
Loaded overall would be 2.8" long.

So we think actions can be modified enough bigger inside, to fit the case..
Make a real hairy lever gun. It being rimless case allows more diameter than
a short fat rimmed cases, in a lever gun for more powder capacity, and power
at moderate peak pressures. Called 585 Big Bore-- 585 BB --cases
allready head stamped right.. Got thousands of cases to make these.
Running moderate 32K psi loads can get 6-7000 ft lbs. Ed

PS, could call it 585 Bad Boy....

Wow! That's between a 20 ga. and 28 ga. bore dia.! I'm too old now to really "appreciate" such things. Ah! If only you'd developed it back when I was still 10 ft. tall, bulletproof and immortal! What case is it based on? The .460 Wby?

It is based on our 585 HE case cut back., and those we made first by

putting a belt on 585 Nyati basic, long, straight brass, then we got

a factory run made of those 585 HEs. Which guys are putting in

long action bolt guns. We by shortening it figure it can be

used in some lever guns.Ed

And used also as a hairy pistol case, in lighter bullets like 350-400 gr.

One guy suggested use in a AR upper. Real hairy.

Look like one lever rifle for it is WIN 71. Which guys do in 50 Alaskan

and our 585 BB is .044" bigger than that 50 AK rim. Should

be able to get room for fit.Ed

Interesting. A friend of mine who lives in shotgun only for deer type land got some .444 Marlin brass made with a different headstamp, and uses it in a .410 shotgun single shot, which IS legal. He had a .430" rifled barrel installed, and chambered for the brass, and thus, shoots a .410 fully rifled shotgun instead of a smoothbore. Kind'a neat really. Several buddies went in on the brass just so they could circumvent the law. It's good to live in a time when one can get custom brass made. Takes several shooters, usually, but if one wants something now, they at least CAN get it.

I like your idea, and would really like to see it in action. Kind'a much for our little southern whitetails where a 180 pounder is a big one, but "overkill" has never been a problem in my mind, and it sure puts a litte "spice" into the chase, doesn't it? Do you have a round ball "rabbit" load for it?

Well round ball would do, little harder to crimp, but glue it in or put a card over it

and Glue in the card.. Put 24ga card and/or wad under ball .

Can also use 300-350gr real light

Minies or the 58cal Hornady or MMP sabots or others, that use

.451-452" 225-250-300 gr pistol bullets.. Our 585s long or short can share all

kinds of sabot stuff and 24ga components for special loading.

BPI has all the 24ga stuff.Ed
