Shot this guy last night in the last few seconds of shooting light. Hit him in the heart/lungs with a Lee 170 ACWW over 21 grains of 2400 in the 30-06 for around 1800 fps. Shot was close, only around 15-20 yards. He tore off across a hayfield and jumped a fence before piling up around 100-125 yards away from where he was hit. That's the farthest I have one run with this load. Amazing how far the can go with a quarter of their heart missing. Closer inspection revealed a deformed jaw and the slightest bit of piebald on his chest and front legs, what some people call a Dork deer. First time I have seen anything like it. Didn't seem to bother him too much, but now he is out of the gene pool and in my freezer!

Yup, he's a dork. Bet he was stumbling around, crashing through the leaves with his tongue hanging out just like now, lol. Good shooting!

Greetings and Congratulations !
That is getting up close and personal. Did you see him coming from any distance ? If so you are patient. Those are the river bottom ranges I see in East ILLinois. Well done !

Nice buck!

Did the bullet hold up ok with such a short shot?

Thanks! He walked out of the woods beside me and I took the shot as soon as he was clear of the brush so not much patience required in that regard. Your right about the bottom, but not IL, NC.

This is the third deer I have shot with that load at close range (5-15 yards) and none of them have shown any evidence of fragmentation. I've only recovered one, from a doe I shot head on in the chest at 50 yards or so. It penetrated around 30 inches, made a nice little mushroom, and retained most of its weight. I've never hit heavy bone with it, so can't really say how it would perform if I did.
