as the title says ...i have a ruger blackhawk
(not a blackhawn!)
chambered in .30 cal. m1 carbine.

and i'm going to load for it.

since i doubt that i'll ever have the rifle, will i be okay in using small pistol primers in my new starline brass?

or is there a reason that i should use rifle primers in this brass?

Pistol primers might work if you stick with low pressure loads, but standard pressure loads require rifle primers

H110 is used a lot for M1 Carbine loads and uses a small rifle magnum primer.

SAAMI specs on the 30 Carbine is 40,000 CUP. Why wouldn't a Blackhawk take the loads?

I have a .30 carbine Blackhawk. I've fired quite a few jacketed bullets through it. With those it's been my experience that nothing equals H110. Recently I've taken to loading it with the Lee C309-120-R with Aluminum check, lubed with Tac1 over 5.0 gr. of unique with a CCI500 pistol primer. It likes this load and I've experienced zero problems with it.

So far all I've fed mine is "LC" ball ammo, and when I get around to loading all my brass back up I only intend to have one load for my M1 Carbine and Blackhawk.

I've had mine for nearly 20yrs and run a ton of mild to wild through it. It is still running strong. AA-9 is one of my go to powders as well for the 110 - 120gr weight bullets.

I would try both. With the small powder column in the .30, you may need less primer than you think. 40,000 Psi is generally where I start thinking about switching to a rifle primer, but then again, my .475 is running 50,000 Psi+, and has never seen a rifle primer. No issues in thousands of rounds. It look like experimenting time to me :)

If loading the 30 carbine rounds with rifle data then I suggest the use of SR primers just in case the ammo should find it's way into a carbine.....you just might get one! If you use 32-20 level loads (probably what you'll use with PB'd SWC cast bullets for the revolver) then the use of standard SP primers is suggested. That's what I ended up doing years ago when I had a 30 Carbine BH.

Don't forget to wear plugs and muffs - the high freq noise is piercing compared to a 44 or 45

I have a 30 carbine BH and it gets used the most of anything I have. Be sure to read Beagles article in the Castpics section below. Very informative.

The 30 Carbine isn't as loud as I expected from everyone stating this, it 's not much more than the 357 and has absolutely NOTHING on the 327 Federal!
