Just got it this afternoon. Shop got it yesterday. A 45-70 No.1 in the H pattern, I believe. 22 inch barrel and nice wood in the butt stock. It has the red rubber pad. I now have a set. A #1 and a #3. And a pair of Marlin 1895s.Cowboy and SBL.

Hello, my name is swamp and I am hooked on 45-70s.

You've picked a nice rifle and a great caliber to get hooked on.

.

I believe you might have snagged a Model 1-S, as the 1-H had a heavier barrel.

A call to Ruger Customer Service, with the SN, should tell.

I have a #1 in 458 Mag and the 45-70 looks similar on a smaller scale.
I will have to give Ruger a call in the morning. Find out exactly what I have. I like the way it handles so far. Next trip shooting I think it will be a 45-70 day. With a Cadet for change up.

It's a 1S. There were very few 1H 45-70's made and they all had the 24" D weight barrel, just like the 458 Mag.
If it were a 1H, it would be worth about $3-4000.

swamp, I contracted 45-70 fever many decades ago and I hate to be the one to tell you, they have never perfected an anti-biotic to cure it. The problem seems to be, # 1, it is very easy to reload for, #2, it has been around for a very long time and brass is easy to obtain. # 3, it doesn't look like the ammo companies will ever stop producing it. I have a Ruger#1 with a Canjure set trigger. If I could only keep one single shot, and I have some nice ones, it would be the Ruger #1.

Swamp, that's a fine looking #1. I believe it is an "S" as well. I like mine a lot. Anything more than midrange loads can be punishing but who needs heavy loads anyway.

I think the "S" had a 26" barrel and the "A" had the 22"

I think the "S" had a 26" barrel and the "A" had the 22"

Except in the 45-70, where it's indeed a B weight barrel (same as the S), but the large bore makes it iffy safety-wise much beyond 22"

To make matters worse, I have a deal on a #3 in 30-40 Krag in the works. The seller is out of town for awhile. Supposed to unfired.

I think the "S" had a 26" barrel and the "A" had the 22"

AFAIK:

#1-A = 22" lightweight bbls

#1-AB = 22" lightweight bbls

#1-B = 26" mediumweight bbls

#1-S = 26" mediumweight bbls (.45-70 = 22" mediumweight bbl)

#1-H = 24" heavyweight bbls

#1-V = 24" heavyweight & 26" mediumweight bbls (depending upon chambering)

#1-RSI = 20" lightweight bbls

#1 Lyman Commemorative = 28" heavyweight bbl

#3 = 22" bbls

I called Ruger today but did not have the time to sit on hold. Going to try again Monday.

It is my favorite #1. I think it is proportioned just right, and it is definitely fun to shoot with modest cast boolit loads.

Haven't shot the 45-70 yet, but have an RSI in 06 that I have been shooting. They are both short and handy. Next time out it will be all 45-70. They all need some exercise.

It sure is a nice looking rifle. Hope it shoots like a champ.
I have 3 different #1's and love them all. I almost have to say the 338 Win Mag is my favorite one for all around work.

Caught the Ruger #1 bug in 1975. First one was a 1-B in .25-06 with some of the most beautiful walnut I've ever seen on a production rifle. Excellent shooter, especially with the heavier weight bullets. Had the leade increased by 0.5" (simple rethroating job) allowing me to seat my bullets well out and take full advantage of case capacity with slow-burning powders (4831, H870 worked very well).

Second was a 1-A Light Sporter in .30-06. This has been my favorite game rifle since 1976. Short and lightweight, easy to carry all day in the hills, and very accurate. This is the rifle I started shooting cast bullets with, and still do so regularly. Especially likes the Lee C309-180R and C309-170RF at around 2000FPS, very effective on mule deer within reasonable ranges. This one has never been fired with factory ammo.

Third was a .300 Win Mag that someone had badly bulged the barrel on, and I was able to pick it up for next to nothing. A fine gunsmith (Ralph Carter, Fountain, CO) produced a 26" tapered octagon barrel with integral front sling swivel mount, front sight ramp and rear sight mount, caliber 7mm Rem Mag, also restocked in Circassian walnut with fleur-de-lis checkering pattern, Neidner curved steel buttplate. Absolutely beautiful rifle (one of those that is just too gorgeous to drag through the woods). With a Leupold 3-9X40AO it will shoot under 1" groups all day at 100 yards from the bench, or ring the gongs at the 400M silhouette range.

Have frequently thought about getting one in .45-70, but never did. That should be a fine platform for cast bullet loads and Colorado elk hunting!

Very nice rifle!
