Second morning of MI firearms season, I had seen 9 does on opener, already have 2 in freezer one mine one my daughters so they passed safely by. Going back to the camp that night saw a decent buck cross the road, next morning saw him cross the road in just about the same place.i drove down the two track in that direction he was heading. I tan like a rabbit over a ridge through a valley and up another ridge back toward the clear cut. I saw the buck at first light one ridge over still heading east, I ran back to the two track and up a third ridge and got to the top about the same time as he did, I stepped on a stick and he froze behind a bunch of small pines, I figured for sure he'd head down the other side , then there was some shooting to our west and that took his mind off the stick he may have heard break, I was behind a small pine as well, after about a half hour waiting game I heard him grunt and start to move, this whole time I could only see his antler tips, I slowly moved along with him till we both cleared the pine trees,I was hitting my grunt call and I think he expected a fight, I made it to the small clearing just as he did. .....one shot with a 1938 vintage winny94 in 30wcf. Some of you may remember my saga last winter of finding her in an old gun sock on a basement floor and the full rework my and my daughter did on it. The load was a 170grain lee that fell from the mold at about 173 and once pcd and gas checked was right at 175 cast from wheel weights and air cooled on top of a good dose of h4895. The boolit entered the bucks neck at a sharp quartering towards me angle, exited the off side shoulder and he was DRT!!!!!! The neck was broken and the lungs pulped, exit hole about the size of a dime. I have pics of deer lungs and rifle but will have to post them later tonight. Couldn't be happier with gun or boolit.

Cool! Can you link the restoration thread as well? I like seeing old firearms restored.

So how far was the shot? Nice to know the Lee 170gr will gitter done! It's my favorite bullet in the dirty thirty. My 336W loves them.

That is so cool. Good for you in all ways to enjoy such a hunt with a rifle that you've put so much into.

Great story and nice deer. Really enjoyed it. I have an old Win 94 30/30 that I found and bought, that by the serial # dates to 1948. I had to replace the forearm and the buttstock, as someone got the idea that a good way to make sling swivels was to drill sideways through the butt and the forearm and then make loops from metal clothes hangers. Guess what the sling was.....bailing twine!

Other than some wear on the bluing that I touched up with Oxpho-blue, the rifles was like new inside as well as the bore. Thankfully no rust!

I shoot the same Lee boolit out of mine with 28 gr/ IMR 4895.

I am going to find your restoration post and read it.

You just gotta love a '94 Winchester!

That's a nice deer, nicer than any I've shot in a while. Conggratulations on the rifle redo and the deer.

Awesome.
What powder and what velocity was the bullet running

The powder was H4895, 24 grains gives just over 1900 fps. When I fired my 24 grain test batch they shot right to point of impact of the Lyman tang sight. 22 grains also gave very good accuracy but hit a might low, during testing I don't do sight adjusting, so when the 24 hit poa I had my winner.

Greetings and Congratulations on a well deserved outcome !
Amazing how the 30-30 will still terminate a corn cruncher. Thanks for the photos also. I remember reading your rebuild. Worked out well.
