You guys are the experts. I now own 2 marlin 1894 rifles (.44 and .357). Both have serial numbers that start O1 therefore I believe they were built in 2009 according to my research. I know that was the year Marlin got sold. Both have a Proof stamp that is just a "M" with the hint of a strike mark just before the "M". Probably a crummy job of stamping the barrels JM?? Proof marks are on the right side of the barrel by the receiver. What are your thoughts and experience with this vintage? Do you think they were built by the Marlin smiths or do you believe they were training new workers at that point.  The 44 shoots fine , have not shot the 357 yet .Thought it was interesting I ended up with 2 of these. thanks

01 serial numbers are 1999 manufacture.

A 2009 manufactured marlin would be a 91 serial number. There are many variations for the JM proof marks. A strong M with a hint of a J is not too uncommon.

Sorry 91 is the first 2 numbers of the serial number, my typo. But thanks for the info that the M proof is not uncommon.

I have a Marlin 25N from 1998 that has the M with just a hint of J in front of it. I think the J was getting worn of the stamp by that timeframe since its within a year of your rifle.
