How many different calibres did the 219 come in? I have a 30-30 and it sure is a favourite of mine.

I had one in .22 Hornet.

Early ones were made in .25-20, .32-20 and .22 Hornet.

Later ones were made in .22 Hornet and .30-30.

I like mine in .22 Hornet very much. Bought a .30-30 one a while back with a ruined barrel I want to have lined to .32 S&W Long.

My hornet is accurate with light loads to duplicate .22 LR. Very graceful, nice pointing little rifle, just about the perfect stalking rifle if you ask me.

Boy a 25-20 would be a nice addition to the arsenal ! I've been to many gun shows in Mn, Wi and have yet to see any 219s forsale!

.

The same actions, but designated as the Models 221, 222, 223,227, 228, & 229, were Model 219's issued by the factory with an additional smoothbore/shotgun barrel.

The different model numbers were assigned to distinguish different rifle/shotgun combinations, different gauges & different barrel lengths.

Were these models still in the same calibres?

Yesterday on Gun Broker they had a 219 barrel for sale in 30-40 Krag calibre. I has a head space problem though as the primers come out a few thousands when fired. Would this happen if only shooting cast?

Some Bubba took chamber to deep. You could ring and reset the depth if to have a lathe and chamber reamer

First thing I would try would be to make up some fire form rounds where a long seated boolit kept the rim hard against the rear of the receiver. After firing I would adjust my size die to the new, slightly forward shoulder. If it really is only a few thousandths primer protrusion, I doubt you would ever have a problem. This brass would be relegated to use in this gun only though.

The safety factor might be a concern with the .30-40 chambering. Neither the .30-30 or .30-40 are high-pressure rounds, but the case-head thrust with the .30-40 would certainly be greater than it would be for the .30-30. Whether this would be enough to matter from a safety aspect, I don't know. Savage didn't chamber these rifles in .30-40 as far as I know, and perhaps for reasons other than a lack of cartridge popularity.

I eye balled the stamping on the barrel as close as you can on the computer and it looked like factory done I think. I wouldn't be too surprised if some one had done it them selves though. Well I feel asleep in the recliner last night and missed out !!!!!

That same guy had one in .218 Mashburn Bee a year or so back. I'm thinking he's a gunsmith who liked experimenting with Savage 219s. I very strongly considered buying that barrel, but didn't.

Correct-a-mundo - For a handloader, there should be no such thing as excessive headspace. ;)

There's a 25/20 for sale on the S&S here for $300 but it's in Austrailia. A guy with an FFL could probably get it here fairly reasonably. I have one in 22H and a 220 in 410. The 22H is a neat rifle but I really like the 25/20 round.

Is the Savage Model 220 the same action as the 219 rifles were made up on?

There's a nice one in a local shop cheap. I've been working on getting one together to make a Rook rifle in .32 S&W Long, and I have a beat up, cut off 20 gauge barrel that would be a good stub for a rifle barrel. Thinking of getting it.

As far as I know, the 220 is the same action as the 219. I do not know for sure if all the changes were done at the same time, i.e. top lever cocking to barrel opening cocking, but it makes sense they would be.

I have thought of trying to find a ruined .22 Hornet barrel to either reline or have bored to .32 S&W Long, but a stubbed barrel would be just as usable.

I have one with a ruined .30-30 barrel I had planned to do that with. The receiver it came with works (no broken firing pin which is common, I'm told and the stock is cracked and crooked. The barrel on that one is already drilled and tapped, so no problems with doing that. After doing a little reading, there are some differences and some barrels won't work with some actions. This one today was cheap enough and nice enough that I'm gonna go get it after pay day. A single shot 20 gauge is a useful enough thing to have around (even though I have a few) that it would be worth what he's asking.
