View Full Version : My son missed

My son missed his chance at a nice buck because he wanted to sleep in and not go hunting this morning. He went with me yesterday and we had a nice one chase a doe right past us at full tilt and didn't get a shot. This morning, I saw a nice buck before legal shooting hours and had to let him go. A bit later, just after legal time, a doe and her two fawns came past. Not long after, the buck showed back up. No second chances, buddy! At 25 yards my suppressed 300 blackout AR15 put a 170Lee FN straight through him. He ran into the brush and I lost sight of him, but it didn't sound like he went far. After a few minutes, I walked the 50 yards to the house, made some coffee and checked out the pics on the game camera. After giving him 45 minutes, I followed the blood not 50 yards after walking right past him, decided the kids needed to get out of bed. This is my first big buck and my first with cast bullets. It's a trophy to me even if its not a record book deer. I had just put my bow up last night, but if I had used it, he may have made Pope & Young.

153396The bullet may have tumbled after impact but got both lungs. He didn't stand a chance.

Very nice. I think your right about making P&Y if taken with the bow. Still a real beauty. Deer (bucks) are running around here but no opportunities for a big 'un yet.

Congratulations! I must admit to being intrigued by the whole .300 Blackout thing, just have too many things to try now.

I used a bit over 15gr of IMR4227. Dunno about chrono but likely 1700ish from my 12.5" barrel. I was leery at first but my Aero Precision upper and CMMG barrel feed the FN bullets just fine. When feeding from the mag there are light score marks from the M4 feedramps but it doesn't seem to significantly affect accuracy. For hunting, I have been dropping the first round into the chamber and closing the bolt before inserting the mag just to make sure I get maximum accuracy from the first shot. My boy got a button buck with the same load. I have to seat pretty deep to be able to chamber them and the gas check is just below the neck but the case is pretty full so it should be held in place by the powder. I had originally planned to get the Lee 150grFN mold because then I wouldn't have to worry about the bullet being too long for the chamber, but this seems to work fine.

That's a nice deer anyway you look at it.

How quiet is that load at 1700 fps?

Well let's just say every time I'm shooting my neighbor thinks I'm shooting a 22. His house is about 200 yards away

Don't have a pic handy. I'll see if I can snap one and upload it. He was excited for me, didn't seem too disappointed that he missed out. We went out this evening and saw several deer including a nice buck chasing a doe but couldn't get a shot. I hope to to get him out a few more times before the season is over so that he can get himself a buck. He passed up an easy shot at a spike this evening because he wanted "The Big One" lol

Dang, now I gotta try some of my 170gr LFN in the BO. I do think my 145 PB LFN would also work.

So far the 170 Lee is the only FN boolit I've tried in the Blackout. I tumble lubed them in Alox and the lube grooves were somewhat outside the neck. Need to PC some and see how they do.

So I've never gotten a buck with antlers worth showing off. I boiled the skull and scraped and power washed it and it was looking pretty good until the dog decided to start gnawing on it. Grrrrr!!! Well it's not as pretty now, but on a whim I decided to measure the antlers. I've never done this before and just used the B&C web site as a guide. My very crude measurements yielded a gross score of 130 and a net of 123. I have no idea how truly accurate this measurement is, and technically it's still "green" for another week. If my measurements are in the ballpark, the deer would be awful close to making Pope and Young had I used my bow. Kicking myself now for putting it up during gun season, but as things go, I probably would have missed or spooked the deer or something anyway, so I'll take my "trophy" for what it is; my best buck and first cast bullet deer. Many thanks to all who have contributed to the wealth of knowledge on this website!

Dont you worry about the "ifs" petroid. Tbat is a damn fine deer and one to be proud of no matter how you took it. Uh...unless it was with a Dodge. ;)

So here it is after mounting on a piece of oak. The dogs gnawed on the snout a bit but luckily didn't damage the antlers.
I didn't get the right G2 in the pic
