Good Evening All,
I came home with a new firearm today. This is the first time I have seen one in the flesh. I'm hoping I did well on the price. Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance. Boats

Yes. Imported by Navy Arms. Made in Italy.

I have one, made by Uberti. Finish is gorgeous. Function is excellent. Mine shoots high but groups very nicely and prefers soft lead seated long, right out to the end of the chamber.

That's a nice gun! you're gonna have a ton of fun with it! The top break is a really nice feature that just feels slick in hand! Congrats!

I have always wanted one, maybe someday!

If you haven't seen the new remake of "3:10 to Yuma" get a copy. The outlaw Charlie Pitts has a pair of Schofields he frequently puts to use!

This is the one made by Uberti, unless Navy Arms have changed supplier recently, and has more metal in the topstrap than the original. It also has a longer cylinder to accommodate standard loadings of the .45LC Colt rather than the shorter S&W version, and modified lockwork to meet import controls.

I think it can be taken as safe with standard commercial loadings of the .45LC cartridge, but not more.

one of the james boys carried one.Jesse was known to have carried one of these S&W top breaks in .44 American. The debate still goes on today whether Bob Ford, used the S&W or a Colt to shoot Jesse in the back of the head.

I have two cap and ball revolvers made by Uberti, and they are of the highest quality, fit and finish. The same is true with a Pedersoli Sharps Berdan I have.

Boatswainmate, I too am drooling over that revolver. Happy for you, and give us some range reports!

A 250 gr cast boolit loaded with 8 to 9 gr of Unigue powder will give you a load duplicating the original black powder 45 Colt load of about 850-900 fps depending on barrel length. As always, start low as to powder charge and work up for safety.

It will give you all the power and recoil you need, as this is powerful load and will do 95% of all any handgun needs to do.

From what I have seen their all made by Uberti, just imported by various people. I had one long ago with the longer barrel, it got stolen. I ordered a new one with the 5in barrel. Shoots good, works with speed loaders, you do have to stick with standard pressure loads. I wanted it in 44-40, but just couldn't find one anywhere, had several shops looking. It needed work out of the box, velocity was all over the place, thought it was my ammo, but did it with factory to. The hammer was not falling consistently, could see where it was hitting the frame. Not hard to take apart, but getting that rear sight/latch back in isn't much fun, they must have some special tool to get that spring where it needs to be. I really like the gun, but wish it had less cylinder gap.

Bought a 5 inch SCHOFIELD last fall. Finally got a loading outfit and set up the DILLON for 45 LC. Starting with a 240 grain NOE full wadcutter and 5.0 of HP38 in new STARLINE brass.

Boat is that the RCBS 255 gr boolit?

After getting that mold, it has become the favorite 45 Colt boolit in my revolvers!

Yes, just as with my original No3 .44 Russian, that is difficult, and reassembling the internal lockwork and extractor as well. The side-swing Colts and Smith and Wessons were far better for anyone who would get his gun wet and dirty enough to need dismantling. It was still one of the great achievements of its day though, which wasn't quite their day yet, and some of the great target shots used it long after they were available.

Only place I had any problems putting it back together was that one spring. Its not easy to get at, and has to be just so for the rear sight to slide in. I would imagine they have some special tool to do it with. Still really neat gun to shoot. Loads pretty fast since its a bit easier to get at the cyl then one that comes out the side.

No idea on the 38 version, its beyond rare to see ANY of these pistols in a case for sale much less a 38 to handle. I would imagine its like a blackhawk where they just drill the holes smaller. But still can't shoot the heavy stuff out of it due to the cyl latch. Now if they made a smaller version of it in 38 might be onto something.

I like the thumb rests on the grips, but wish I could buy blank ones as I would like mine lefty. I did it on a 1917 S&W that I bought, modified some pietta 1858 grips to fit, only has a thumb notch on one side.

Well I had to re-design what bullet to use since the Schofields cylinder is only 1.600 inches.

My gun shop had 2 of them. 1 in 45LC with a shorter barrel than yours, and a 38 special with the long barrel. I was allowed to handle them but not turn the cylinders since they were new. They didn't want them to be marked up. The 38 felt significantly heavier than the 45 did. I attribute that to the extra length of the barrel and the smaller hole in the cylinder.
They were pretty expensive. Just under $1000 for either of them.
I was curious as to how well the 38 would shoot as compared to a Ruger blackhawk in 357.

You have a very nice revolver, Boats. I also have a Navy Arms marked Schofield which I enjoy very much. I load a 225 grain or 240 grain bullet over Unique or Bullseye for 750fps more or less which is similar to the old .45 Schofield load. Verry accurate and effective enough for me.
Part of the problem with these guns is the import mandated "safety." To me it is totally unsafe as it can cause the hmmer to fail to drop when required, I took mine out and threw it in the trash. The original worked for 140 years without the gizzmo.
As the cylindere was lengthened to accomodate the .45 Colt, it no longer has a gas ring to stop powder fouling entering the cylindeer base pin bushing and th gun will sieze up in 12 to 24 rounds when shooting black powder.

Yea you gotta watch the length on ammo in these guns. I had some RN lee 230gr loaded up, worked fine in my blackhawk. Nope you need the FN to get them to fit in the schofield. I couldn't shoot the gun that day as I didn't have anything that would fit in it on hand. My blackhawk is way more accurate, but the sights are little better on it.

I have seen 2 of these sitting in the case at a shop. The first one I bought it was in the 90s. And I saw a used one on consignment, maybe 2 yrs ago, but didn't have the cash at the time. Might have seen one at a show. Have a friend who works at a gun shop, and he had never seen or heard of one until he saw mine.

I need some help with some loading data . . . been searching but not coming up with much. So if anyone on here loads the 45 Schofield . . could you check it out and give me a hand if you can? Greatly appreciate it! Link to the thread in CB & your favorite cartridge .. .
