Just have a question. Does everybody have the primer cup not always drop far enough through the shell holder to insert a new case? It doesn't matter whose shell holder I try, they all don't allow the primer cup to fall into the shell holder every 4th or 5th time. Polishing the shell holders will probably solve this slight annoyance. It just seems that for such a simple machine that making the cup slightly longer would have cured this so polishing would not be needed. Probably was made in China so I guess I expect too much quality control for where it came from. And $100 doesn't buy so much anymore. Sorry for the rant!! Mine is from the early 70's and zero issues with it.

I bought mine 2 years ago and don't have that issue. Have you called RCBS and give them a chance to correct it?

The primer cup is on a threaded rod. That rod will sometimes need to be tightened to keep the cup centering properly. I use a bit of Teflon tape to insure it stays secure.

I put a new spring on mine, for some reason the org spring started to bind a little in the shell holder keeping it from returning back down.

Drag the cup through some graphite, should work in short order.

Bought mine used from a member. No problems. Sure beats the RCBS squeeze type.

The bottom of the cup catches on the edge of the shell holder. It's as if the threaded rod's threads aren't long enough to allow the cup to be low enough. I'll call RCBS on Monday before I polish anything. Contrary to most on here, I have never had a good experience dealing with RCBS. If Dillon made a bench primer, I would have purchased from them.

I have a new version of the tool. So far zero problems. It is mounted to a RockDock. I have used the primer cup rods that came with the unit and the ones that came with the ram prime. The directions that came with the unit says don't over tighten the primer cup to the unit. Mine are finger tight. Check for a burr on the cup. You may need a new cup. I use Hornady shellholders with mine as well as Lyman, RCBS, Redding and CH4D.
My wife uses the tool the most and really likes it compared to any lemon squeezer.
take care

I have the newer model that I bought about 2 years ago. No problems at all. I'm like r1kk1, it beats the hell out of the "lemon sqeezer". I can't get my wife to use it though...some guys just marry wisely..;)

Rod, I have the same problem with the one I have. A little polishing of the shell holder helped, but didn't totally alleviate the problem. All in all, I'd still rather use it than any other priming tool I have.

Drag the cup through some graphite, should work in short order.
Clean inside of shell holder and primer punch with alcohol.
Then as stated powder with graphite.
Slightest amount of old lubricants seem to hold the ram up on mine.
When cleaned, and lubed as above(Sweetpea's post), no problem. Smooth!

Thanks for the ideas. I'll try all the suggestions. It's not a deal breaker but just an annoyance. Rod

I think a bench primer tool would help me. I use the Lee Ergo Prime and I really like it, but I have more arthritic weakness in my hands and grip than I care to admit. As for RCBS, what are the opinions of the bench primer that uses a tube feed vs the type that uses the plastic strips?

bunkysdad:
I have both, but recently sold the tube feeder. They both work well, they get the job done. My preference is for the strip bench mount. I did not like filling the tubes and I have heard of too many blow ups on the net using the tubes.
Of course, with the strip feeder mount, you have to spend extra $$$ to get the strip loader, however, the loader is quick and it works reasonably well. You do get to keep your mitts off of the primers!
Also, with the strip bench mount, you get to (somewhat) adjust the depth of the primer. You do have a lot of leverage with both set ups, more with the strip feeder mount.
BTW, the strip lemon squeezer by RCBS also works well. I have a touch of arthritis so, I don't use this guy much. It too, seats primers down by the way.
I have given up seating primers on the press!

I have the newer model that I bought about 2 months ago. I've done large & small & no operation problems at all. When first setting up, I opened the baggie with the priming stems parts & found only 1 spring was included. I called RCBS & a couple of days later I had one.

I didn't call RCBS. I took my Dremel and a cone shape bit and chamfered the inside of all my shell holders. I have holders from every manufacturer. They all would catch the bottom of the primer cup every now and then. I took very little off, almost just polishing. They all work like they should now. All is good!! Rod

Mine do that sometimes. Keeping them clean seems to help and I have polished the primer rods. The bores of the rods can be cleaned with a bronze .22 Cal cleaning brush. I have two, both of which would measure their age in decades. I'm going to try a slight chamfer on the bottom of the primer cup. I think any little break of the sharp corner would work.
