Does anyone know of a .45 rifle mould (Lyman, RCBS, SAECO) which casts at
.461" or larger? Seems I read in the past of a mould ( possibly intended for Trapdoor?) which cast around .462". I am trying to assist a friend with a .45-70 with a .462" groove dia. He wants to see how the rifle will shoot before even thinking about a custom mould.

I suggested BP and soft alloy but he is not ready to get that radical yet!

I think my Ranch Dog mould casts that big. It is a gas check design, but they are also only about 25$ for a 2 cavity. He offers it in 350 and 425 gr. weights.

Lee's hollowbase 405 casts close to that (mine is .463") but you might want to send them 25 dollars so they might select one on the sure to be big enough side. Production moulds do vary and unless you ask for what you want you won't get any guarantees.

As for the other manufacturers the same request couldn't hurt. I do know .462" is much larger than most of them cast off the shelf. Thus making a production mould a crapshoot.

The SAECO 881 bullet is a copy of the 1881 500 gr Govt bullet and will cast at .460" Works great in my Trapdoor as does the Lee 405gr hollow base that 35 Remington recommends.

I've had a couple of 2 cavitys made by Mountain Molds, both cast .462, exactly as I asked for.
