.223 Brass

I have a TC .223 that I enjoy shooting. I have been reloading and reusing the brass and now I am looking to purchase more brass. Looking at the swapping and selling section, I noticed people asking questions to the sellers about the brass. It seems some brass are better than others and I would like to know what to look for in the .223 brass. Is there some brass that I should stay away from? Which brass is considered treasures?

For a TC I would guess that just about any brass would work. The thing is that you want to use the same headstamp to maintain consistency, not an issue if you are just plinking. I reform mine into 300 Blackout and some brass is just too thick for that purpose and won't chamber right without turning the necks (in or out).

I have 5 contenders and shoot 8 different cal. 223 being one of them. I shoot mixed head stamps, the only thing that I do is swage the primer pockets and full size them the first time around after that I just use the lyman m die on them and reload and shoot. I have a 14" bull barrel and shoot a 3/4" group at 100 yards. I also cast my bullets.

Casting for the .223 will be a venture I will explore soon. This is kind-a off topic but which mold and alloys do you use to cast for the .223?

I use the NOE # 22-055 FN 55 GR. Gas checked mold. my alloy is Lino Type. The bhn is 18. I also use the same boolit in my 22 hornet for NRA metallic silhouette shooting. I slow down the feet per sec. To 1750 fps. Can not exceed 1800 fps. They work really good for that.

I too have an encore. I use R-P brass in it. it is all commercial and primer pockets are good and tight. Any brass I have that has the primer crimp, I use the chamfer tool on a cordless drill. I have brass that has been reloaded 20 times and still has tight pockets and soft necks. And I use a neck sizer by RCBS.

I only buy unprocessed 1x brass when I buy it. I want it dirty and the fired primer left in. Just to many folks not up to speed on brass prep.

I shoot Remington/Bikial single shot rifle .223. I weight the cases (all the same headstamp), to lots +/- 1.0grains. The idea that a heavier case is thicker, and will have more pressure when fired, a lighter or thinner case will have less pressure. Thus,creating a vertical string in the group. When I competed with my M1 Garrand, this helped me. The .30-06 cases were lotted to +/- 3.0 grains
