I have just acquired a Marlin 1895 in 45-70. It is about 25 years old with a straight stock, nice figure to the grain, Micro Grove rifling and a Redfield peep sight. I got it from a friend who has taken over 15 elk with it on his ranch in Montana. All the elk were taken with the Remington 300gr HP.
I also acquired a Lyman 457191 mold. This is a PB that should give out boolits at 295 grains. I am using Felix lube. I have WW and linotyoe. Is it possible to get this PB to shoot at velocities close to the Remington Factory loads of 1800 fps?
How fast could this boolit shoot reasonable well?
I know I need to slug the barrel and determine what if any sizing I need to do.
Can Dacron filler help?
I plan on starting load work up with IMR4198
I hope to purchase a Ranch Dog mold for it in the future would like to get this one shooting first.
