How does an avatar change all by itself?

I noticed a few days ago, my avatar was changed to one of the advertisers banners. How does that stuff happen when I didn't do it?

I don't know why they change.

Sort of off topic but relevant to avatars. When you change them I see them when you post. But when a post is quoted, it shows your previous avatar in Tapatalk. Kind of screwy and it causes some confusion if you're quickly scanning threads.

The Confederate States of America had three national flags, this is the first one.

For a while I was getting changes in my own Avatar, and seeing others change as well. They would change to Vendor Sponsor avatars, move all over the page and sometimes disappear entirely. Other people's Avatars would move around as well. Also the borders would change to some weird colored fretwork.

I went the the Forum Actions and changed the Editor Interface around a couple times. One of the settings doesn't allow italics or emoticons, but I hung on with that one for a while and then went through a few others and finally back to the one I started with. So far it's OK again.
