So I picked up a Springfield range officer with a 5 inch barrel. The ramp looks fairly polished, but not a total mirror finish like my xd has. My question is do I shoot a 228 grain round nose or a 200 grain swc to break her in? Also, this is sort of a "I finally got one" post as well! I've been waiting quite a while to get a 1911!

Way to go! I'd send a bunch of both styles through it. Shouldn't have problems with either.

I would use the 200 gn. just so I could get more boolits per pound of lead.

How about 230 jacketed ball first?

I'll probably send some ball at the end. Then a few of the critical duty. It's time to order a couple new boxes.

+1 I like to run about 500 rounds of jacketed bullets first in a new gun

452460 with LBT blue, right at 800fps. Does wonders. I haven't had a chance to try it, but I thought I would hand lap my next new barrel rather than fire lap (shooting jacketed). I haven't had a chance to yet as my last few are used or already lapped from the builder.

Considering I just spent wayyyyy too much money, a hand lap might have to wait a while. I still might do it later, just cannot afford any new parts/tools/compounds!

Those RO's respond VERY well to the throat, crown & polish package.. Those barrels are excellent for cast after they get worked over.

Bingo. After having leading issues in a couple of new revolvers I always do this. That said my 1 & only practice load any more is 5.0gr Titegroup under 200gr Berry or Ranier plated bullets. This load has been accurate in every 1911 I have ever tried it in.

I'll slug it and size accordingly. I might need to open up my boolits for my xd as well a thousandth, it looked like a possible loose fit. However I want to try and test a few loads! Wish me luck, it's the weekend to load.

Since you shoot hornady, I would suggest the lee 230 tc style bullet. I powder coat, so style doesn't matter. Very accurate ( I run 6.8 of hs-6 btw) ant poi and feed almost identical to the xtp/critical line. Also, in my experience, powder coated boolits are perfect for break-in. Somewhere between jacketed and lubed cast. My 1911 has had exactly one mag of jacketed through it and that was to confirm poi matched cast.

By the way, I feel ya on finally getting one. Here is my baby, complete with imitation stag grips ( my dad's .22 had stag-o-lite grips, first pistol I ever shot)

Lately I've been running a 200gr SWC with 5.3gr of W231. Nice easy going load and puts the hurt on some paper.

My Springfield may have seen 50 jacketed rounds, the rest were cast. After about 27,000 of them, it shoots as good or better than it did when new. Enjoy your new toy :)

I test ran a few of my dummy rounds last night through, it loads them flawlessly, but I'm wondering how big of a jump from the mouth to the rifling. We will see on Tuesday when I hit the range! I want to push through about 250 through it. Most cast, some federal fmj and a few of my carry rounds...

I will post some results when I get back!
