New (to me) rifle, new cartridge, new caliber. Rifle in hand, dies, brass and sizing die enroute. Missing piece of the puzzle is a mould. I like the Lyman 401043 profile but would prefer a 4-cav mould, preferably a NOE but none seem to have a crimp groove. Suggestions?

401043(40143) is Lymans first design for the 38-40, works great in the 38-40 and 40 S&W.

I can send samples if you want some.

This is Accurate's traditional blackpowder design for the .38-40, which has correct lubricant capacity for Goex powder. If you plan on using smokeless only, the Lyman bullet will be fine.

A Lee factory crimp die might help, too for the light loads used in cowboy action the boolits might not jump.

My shooting buddy has the Lyman mould and I have a line on a used one. It's his fault I bought this rifle so the least he can do is contribute a few boolits, lol. Hadn't made it to Tom's site, that one looks good too. I guess I should have mentioned that I'll be shooting mostly BP in this rifle, will be using a BP design and SPG regardless of powder. I feel (with the occasional exception of the 45-70) that hyphenated cartridges; 32-20, 38-40, 44-40, all the BPCR cartridges as well as the 45 Colt are best experienced with good old Holy Black.

Finally got a chance to hang out on Tom's site today, that 40-180E is quite likely what I'm looking for. I like the crimp & lube groove arrangement better than the Lyman. The 40-185C caught my eye as well, not sure what they were trying to do with this apparent variation of the 40-180E. Still haven't slugged the rifle, too many projects and this one hasn't even made the list yet!
