I got a second-hand 165 Ranch Dog mould. One plain-based cavity and one g.c. I'll be using it mostly for my 30 WCFs and .300 Savage.

What would be the highest velocity I should go with the plain based? I would have preferred both as gas checked, but it was a second-hand deal..

What would be the highest velocity I should go with the plain based? Depends on the material you cast your boolits with and the powder used. There is a Web site that you should check out for those powder recipes needed for both cartridges and too using the same P/B lead boolit for both cartridges also.

Save yourself the headache and send me the mold for proper disposal. If the alloy and lube/coating is up to it, you should be able to crowd 2000 in a 30 plain base. I am sure someone with this mold will chime in.

Me, personally, I'd run the GC boolits as fast as a manual recommends (about 2K?) and I'd load the PB boolits as plinkers in the 1200 to 1500fps range. YMMV.

Good morning
For the PB you can find PB gas checks.
Many molds that I order are purchased with at least one cavity PB. I like to have that option to experiment with. You may discover one day that if you paper patch that PB boolit properly you can be shooting your cast boolit as fast as metal clad items.

I pushed the gas-checked RDs to about (guessing here) 2,000 fps (32 grains of 3031-Tumble-lubed with Alox/furniture- out of a long-barreled Sav. 99 .300 Sav.) with fair accuracy and no leading.

I got not-great results out of the plain-based boolits out of a Win. 94 at 50 yards. pushed by 6 grains of Tite Group. also Alox/wax lube.

Too fast?
