Spitzer cast bullets

Hi guys a bit of a silly question, the only cast bullets I have ever shot are round nose and flat nose. I guess largely because most moulds are of that variety.

I would like to hear from people who shoot cast spire point bullets and how succesful they are.

I have been looking through some NOE and CBE moulds and have been getting ideas could bullets like this offer much of a ballistic advantage in cast?

I have used 30 cal spire points 200 grain over 40 grains of 4831 with good success this was in my old 742 remmy jama matic.

Here is a great thread that demonstrates the potential with spire points if you don't try to match jacketed speeds with the more aerodynamic bullet profile.

start doing searches on the forum on specific mold designs from Lyman and Ideal that you want to use and you'll find several others have gone down the spirepoint path already.

I shoot several spirepoint cast bullets and I enjoy using them. 125gr Ideal 311359, 170gr Ideal 311413, Herters copies of the 180gr 323481 and 100gr 257418 and as long as I don't hot rod them, they work just fine.

I started with RN/FP boolits and still use them in tube fed rifles, but I've been shooting the Lyman designed 311334 and 314299 (and others) with great results in 30 calibre rifles for quite a while now. While not truly spitzers, they are ballistically more efficient than the RN designs and they generally hold to about 2 to 3 MOA in virtually all my military rifles with a couple of the rifles approaching 1 1/2 MOA for 10 shot groups. I shoot quite a bit at ranges from 200 to way out there and the spitzer designed projectiles hold up pretty well at extended ranges and often, on calm days, shoot about as well as jacketed bullets. My sweet spot for all my military rifles seems to be about 1,800 to 1,900 fps with these heavy nose riding designs.

One of the keys to getting these longer nosed projectiles to shoot well is to ensure that your nose bearing surface does just that. Not only are you worried about your groove diameter, but also your land diameter when selecting such a boolit.

I've won a few trophies shooting an RCBS 7.62-130 grain spire point out of TC32-20-10".

I shot this target at a ASSRA match, last Saturday. It's my smallest 10 shot, 200 yard target, so far. My smallest 5 shot group at 200 is .463, also shot in a match with a spitzer but, in 33 cal.

Most of my groups run around 1.25 (5 shot) and 2.0 for 10 shots @ 200.

Both are target rifles, the 30 cal is pictured in my avatar and the 33 cal is a 1878 Sharps Borchart with a modern barrel.

Pointy boolits go have a much better ballistic coefficient, but for hunting game they will just pass right though.

Since Most of my cast work is for targets, I don't have a problem with spitzers ;)

I have shot and terminal tested a couple true spire pointed boolits. One is a 30 cal 180 gr spire point plain base from a Saeco mold and the other is a 25 cal true spire from a Lyman mold. Accuracy has been about the same as with more rounded boolits of the same size but expansion has been nil for the spire points. Both spires tend to veer quickly in the media and going off in odd directions without expansion so I prefer a more rounded nose with a smaller meplat than most others prefer. The most interesting to test the first time was the 30 cal spire plain base 180. Because of the plain base I did my first test at an MV of 1300 in a 308 bolt rifle. At 40 yards the first four rounds were in a tight cloverleaf that would fit in a quarter and the boolits were stable.
