Picked up a minimally used Stag Super Varminter today for a song. I sure am glad the AR market is saturated. Cheap second hand guns for me.

Anyhow. It has a 24" bull, SS, air gauged, ER Shaw Barrel on it and comes with a one half inch guarantee from the factory. I loaded up some Hornady 68gr BTHP Match and some 50gr ZMax for grins. It has a Weaver Target 6-24 AO scope on it.

If anyone has any load advise, I'm all ears.
Pictures and report when I get a chance to shoot it, hopefully tomorrow.

stock photo enclosed. Mine also has a Magpul fully adjustable stock on it instead of the A2 style rifle stock. And a bipod. Woot Woot.

my stag is a 16 inch 1in8 gun It really likes hornady 60grain vmax and 2230. 3/4 inch 5 shot groups out of a battle rifle is nothing to sneeze at. Ive had bolt 223s that wouldn't do that

Yours is a 1 in 8 twist so the first recommendation will seem odd but I have great success with 40 grain Nosler BT or Hornady V-max over 27.5 grains of H335. I shoot this load everything for 7 twist thru 13 twist. Way overspun in the fast twists but still shoots great in all and it really makes prairie dogs pop. Great for running coyotes also. It does lose steam after 300 yards.

Next is 55 grain Nosler BT's or Hornady V-max's over 25.5 grains of H335. I have tried CFE223 but I can't get it to shoot as well as H335 .

I have the same one as in the stock photo. [only in green]

the sierra 63gr on top of some AA-2230 is good. [very good] H-322 should work just fine also it does under the hornady 60gr v-max
I just missed a bunch of the sierras in the S&S section.

but it is no big deal, I make my own [with J-4 or the sierra match jackets] and they will keep 5 under 1/2" pretty easily, messes up rock chucks too.
I won't waste them on ground squirrels, but a yote would be easy enough out to 300 yds.
yeah it's my varmint rifle.

ohh it'll shoot cast just fine too.
don't let the 1/8 twist barrel fool you, do your part in the casting and reloading rooms and you can shoot good groups at about 2800 fps.

I just wish it came without the forward lock up the bolt assistant knob that jabs me in the back all the time.

Thanks for the load advice guys. I've got some 68gr BTHP and 50gr Zmax loaded with XBR 8208 which has done phenomenal for me in other loadings.

in my excitement I left the ammo at home when I went to the range.

No no worries as I was sighting in my Sig M400 hunter in 300 BLK. With 110gr Hdy Vmax and 19.9gr 296 I was holding 1" at 100, 2" at 200 and banging steel at 300 with ease. Gonna use this on deer this season.

I also ran 250+ through my new Kimber Raptor which ran flawlessly. I was shooting 200gr LSWC over 5.3gr 231. It has been accurate in every 45 I've shot and this one was no different. Today was a shakedown function check day but I could hit the steel plates at 15yds without a problem every time.

all in all a good day.

You might want to look at TAC powder. I have found high velocity and phenomenal accuracy in 3 different ARs with 55 gr bullets. All with different twist rates BTW. ;)

That is one sharp looking AR.

John if you get a chance to pick one up you won't be disappointed.
the only thing I can compare the stag to is the Armalite M-15 I also have, it's built for high-power type matches and is a machine at 300 yds.
but as far as consistently small groups at 100 yds the Stag is a winner, it shoots better than most of my bolt rifles, and easily as good as my savage 12 [single shot bolt rifle] in 220 swift.

I use it mostly for rock-chuck hunting where I walk the rock piles, and like i said earlier, the assist is my only complaint.

that bullet shoots extremely well in all my ars be they 1-7 1-8 or 1-9 To me its allways been the shoot in any ar bullet. My guess is it would even shoot in a 1-12 gun. I know that if I could only have one bullet to shoot in all my ars that would hands down be my choise. The 55 grain vmax would be a close second

Update:

need more work with the 68gr BTHP Match bullets.

The 50gr VMaxs shot like a house a fire. This is with no load development, I forgot my rest and bags and just shooting off the front bipod at 100 yds. I was trying to sneak out for an hour or so and was a last minute run the range. This girl will shoot. Now to start some load development and to remember my gear!
