does anyone here offer a shotgun choke tube treading service? i have a 870 barrel that i would like shortened and threaded for choke tubes. currently it is 28 inches long with vent rib. looking to shorten it to 20-22 inches. i have a poly choke II and with the 28 inch barrel and the poly choke installed it's like trying to carry a 2x4 wall stud instead of a shotgun. i know there are several commercial places that do this type of work but $130-$150 seems pricey for my wallet just now. what do you guys recommend?

My take is that, since threading the bore, somewhere aft of the current front end, can be complicated due to barrel wall thickness - it's worth saving up the bux to have a pro like Briley, Carlson's, etc do the dirty deed.

you're probably right, bought a 18 inch cyl bore barrel several tears ago, had a friend (passed away now) that was going to thread it for me for nothing, (he used colonial tubes i believe) but the tube was about as lopsided as it gets. once you knew where to look you could see it without measuring and that was a new remington barrel. he wasn't sure he could thread it and make sure it was absolutely straight, it was so short if he made a mistake he could not start over so i didn't do it, sold it and got my money back. not sure why no one sells a short vent rib threaded barrel but i think they could sell a boat load of them, especially if the price was reasonable. thanks...

Actually, Remington made their Model 1100's & Model 870's in a Special Field (straight-grip) version (w/ "SPECIAL" roll-stamped in the LH receiver wall), with a 23" VR bbl w/RemChokes in the later version (early SF's had 21" VR bbls with an I/C choke)- but I think the model's now discontinued.

The various online gun auctions usually have both the 12ga & 20Ga versions.

Remington made some 18 inch vent rib barrels sometime in the past, I have one. Picked it up cheap a few years ago. The special field barrels have the attachment ring in a different position and do not fit the non-Special Field guns. They have a shorter mag tube.
I can also recomend Mike Orlen highly, he has installed chokes in several guns for me, all over unders and all came back in short order and flawless workmanship. Grting ready to send him a SxS barrel set. Very econimacal also.

Years ago I took my 1100 Mag barrel to a local gunsmith 30" Full and he sent it out and had it cut 26" ( handier in a duck blind) and fitted with choke tubes. Back then and I would say that was the mid 80's it cost me $100.00 and came back with three chokes IMP, Mod, and FULL and tube wrench they used True Choke Tubes have been happy with it ever since and it is basically the only shotgun I use Ducks to Doves
