hi, i just received a ruger #3 .45-70 off of gunbroker. what would be the best way to attach the front swivel? a standard wood screw stud? Or is there a piece that attaches to the barrel band? advise? irishtoo

.

IIRC, Uncle Mike's makes a front QD stud for Rugers with the forend barrel band, that slips between the ends of the forend barrel band.

To install, just remove the screw from the forend barrel band with a cartridge rim, file the INSIDE of both sides until the band can be tightened enough to securely grip both the FE & the bbl.

The rear QD stud is basically a wood screw, that should be pre-drilled for the diameter of the screw thread (to prevent stock damage), and not for the outside diameter of the screw threads (the hole will not be small enough for the wood screw's thread's to chew into).

Warning - if you load up your #3 45-70 to maximum pressures and your hand is near the band/sling attachment, you'll be sorry as the recoil can cause damage to your hand.

Had one of those in the early 70's.
My shoulder still hurts when I think about it.

Yeah, traded down to 375 Big Bore version - much more pleasant.

Just fold the base forward, then the front band can do the same damage.

For these rifles I like a clean pair of buck skin gloves to protect my hand and improve my grip on the rifle.

Had one of those once upon a time...came to me with a partial box of Remington factory ammo (300 gr. JHPs - 6 empties, 14 loaded rounds). When I traded it off, that same box of Remingtons...less four or five loaded rounds...went with it. Much as I enjoy shooting my other single-shot Rugers, I've never regretted seeing that one go down the road.

I recently sold a #3 45/70 after I lost most of the vision in my right eye. I consider them one of the most useful woods rifles, EVER! You do not have to run that rifle "wide open". As issued with high velocity loads IS a prescription for HURT! However, a 340-350 gr bullet at 1300-1400 fps will go through most any big game animal end for end at 100 yards. Use the right alloy, and DRT! I replaced that "killer" carbine style buttplate with a GOOD recoil pad (shortened the stock to my preference with the thicker recoil pad) and it was dern near comfortable to shoot with reasonable loads. It's light weight was a pleasure to carry. I sold it to a good friend and he dropped off some pork chops from a large wild hog he recently harvested. Using the proper bullet and load, a 45/70 is a meat collecting tool, first rate!

After my No.3 .375 Winchester was rechambered to H&H it kinda pulled rib muscles.
Now it's rebarreled since about 35 years ago.

I have gone through a few #3s and the one in 45-70 I remember quite well for it's recoil. Most of them were changed to a longer octagon barrel which took out a little of the recoil and all were sold off when money was tight.

Was this the one that was up with no reserve? I was eyeballing it, thinking about bidding when someone jumped on the "buy it now" button.

Enjoy.

OH changed their hunting laws and we can now hunt with rifles, straight walled cartridges only. Was hoping to pick that up for gun season even though I couldn't really afford it right now. Wound up putting a semi buckhorn on my rolling block and I'll use that. It's a bit heavy but that seems to be a trend with me. My bow's an old, HEAVY Oneida, my tree stand's old and heavy, I'm old and heavy. Figured I'd use an old heavy rifle to round things out, maybe finally get an old, heavy deer.

put a dead mule in the butt stock and then on top of that put a nice slip on padded recoil pad. thats what those two are made for, recoil reduction.

this story reminds me of the guy who brought a Remington rolling block pistol to my range. He had a Rcbs 100 round ammo box with 99 loaded rounds and ONE spent round. The load was a 500 gr. J word bullet and a stout rifle load of powder. He wanted to see if anyone wanted to shoot it! Several folks did touch off one round. My bubbly shot it three times and I shot it seven times. I shot it seven times. I was wearing a good pair of shooting gloves and they were shredded and some skin also!I was shooting IHMSA at the time and had shot a number of heavy recoiling handguns but this was way over the top! I cannot imagine what he was thinking when he built the rounds and what I was thinking when I shot it!

There are drop-in (fugly) recoil pads that fit all curved Ruger buttstocks ( #3, 10/22 & Mini-14, etc, etc) for about $10.

You're in luck. A friend of mine from the American Single Shot Rifle Association is named Steve Durren and he is one of the Gunsmiths at Johnson's over in Adrian, MI. If you can't locate it from up there, I'm sure I can find the address for you, but I don't have it handy. IIRC, he's even done a rimfire conversion on one or more of them as well as more mundane conversions like building a 32-40 Schuetzen rifle for another friend of ours.

I love the 45-70. I used a browning high wall for black powder silhouettes. It was a very accurate rifle. I am thinking about getting another 45 70.

The 45-70 High Wall and the 45-70 Ruger Carbine are two totally different animals that happen to eat the same food. Having shot a couple of original high walls and having been abused by a carbine, I say this with complete authority. There is a MAJOR difference!

Fortunately a good time doesn't depend on filling a tag. If it did, we'd all need to find something else to do for fun.

I shot one starting trapdoor load in a work up in an NEF handi Rifle 45/70.
The recoil combined the stabbing pain in the shoulder with the big shove backwards a few feet.
I did not shoot that rifle a second time for over year.

I can shoot a 338WinMag 250 gr 2600 fps 10 pound BAR with Limbsaver all day.
But I steer clear of anything but powder puff loads in a 45/70.

Swapping to a No. 1 buttstock will help, but heavy loads will still knock you stupid with the No. 3. Yep, I will add to the chorus--light loads only. Even with those, I'll often put a 5lb bag of shot btw my shoulder and the rifle butt.

the #1 buttstock is the first modification every #3 should have, no matter what caliber.

The #3 finger lever doesn't match up very well with the #1 butt stock... I can see the potential for even more pain.

Warning - if you load up your #3 45-70 to maximum pressures and your hand is near the band/sling attachment, you'll be sorry as the recoil can cause damage to your hand.

As an owner of a ruger #3 along with a number 1 keep the loads tame or you will not be happy! The gun can more than take it but you might not especially with those 550 grain ones.

I had one of these it looked horrible. I ended up buying a leather recoil stock - butt pad and putting a little more padding it. It helped alot.

Aren't these a hard plastic stock 'extender' ?
The only one I have ever seen, was a used one, on a gunshow table, some years ago, appeared to not to have any cushion and would seemingly do Nothing for recoil.

PS, I'm only posting this, because this thread is about the #3 in 45-70 and it's nasty recoil. One of these days, I'm gonna actually shoot mine.
