Five shot group, right round 2 3/4 inches @ 100 yards, with a Marlin 336 30-30. The first two lower left shots were from a clean barrel. The group really tightened up after the first two fouling shots. I'm using a Lyman 31141 sized to 310. These were made from some range scrap with a little tin added, over 11 gr of Unique. For lube I used some Ben's Red and some of my Pat Marlin's homemade gas checks. I don't think I could ask for much more out of this load.

It's always fun tweaking things and going from six inch groups to something like this. I went slightly over the maximum powder load for this combination by half grain, as was listed in my old Lyman handbook.

Very nice! I'm currently working on getting a similar result with my 336 in 35 Rem. Your results are inspiring.

Mind you this load is absolutely awful in my pre micro groove 336. It doesn't want anything to do with anything cast that's sized under .311. It also likes to go a little slower with the same Lyman 31141, with 9.8 gr of Unique. It really seems to prefer the Lyman 311291. You just got to find what each individual rifle likes.

Nice group! Interesting that the soft alloy boolits liked the fast burning powder and pressure generated by that load.

Nice group and thanks for sharing. I'm getting serious about groups out of my glenfield 30 and my 336. I'm using the Lee 175 FP and will soon try the Ranch Dog 165. But my alloy is similar--range lead and some tin to fill out the mould. I'm going to seriously cull and weigh cases to see how much difference it makes.

are you using a scope?

Ah, Unique and 30-30. What a combo. My old load was 10 grains and 311466. More fun than anything. I really need to shoot more of that for old times sake.

From playing with this rifle it seems to like this mystery melt. It really tightened the group as I increased the charge. Don't know if the higher pressure forced more lead into the micro groves. I do know I had just the slightest traces of lead during cleaning.

Yeah, these old eyes need some help anymore. Right now it's sporting a Nikon Prostaff 2-7x32.

goodsteel. the 30-30's were my go to rifles during the great .22 shortage. Unique and 700X let me be able to get some range time

Lookin' good. For even more fun at less cost than .22 nowadays try the Lee 113 grain over just about any medium speed pistol powder.

Is that a "Rimfire" scope?

Is that a "Rimfire" scope?

No, looking at the box it's Nikon part #6719. I do have the Prostaff designed for the .22 w/the BDC reticle but that one is a 3-9x40 Nikon part #6725.
