Removed the barrel from a Savage Axis 30-06 today and notice there is no barrel lug? Is this something Savage is doing on the Axis rifles? Only the barrel nut ! Will I need to purchase a lug to put a shaw barrel back on this action?

The Savage Axis Line has an independent barrel lug. It is located on the stock and rests in a notch at the base of the barrel nut. You can remove the barrel lug form the stock so make sure not to loose it!

i was under the impression that axis barrels were interchangeable with the old "normal/regular" type savage barrels. if the recoil lug design is different are the barrels still interchangeable? have been looking at a couple on gun broker. swapped my blued 308 for a stainless 22-250 while back(both non-axis type barrels) for $70. this has a great interest for me, a lot of gun options caliber wise for not much money. thanks.........

I have no axis yet but if the action stock is as described you should be able to use any older savage 110 barrel on it.

Lug is in Stock as in photo 1. Notice the notch behind the nut where the lug inserts.

i understand how it fits now but is the length/depth of the chamber approximately the same? we were told by some sites that marlin and savage barrels interchange but some marlin bolt action barrels need to be trimmed back a small distance to headspace properly. the chambers are slightly deeper than savage. not trying to be nit picky but life is a lot simpler (especially if you don't have a lathe) if they are directly interchangeable. just assuming that the thread length is the same. thanks...............

The chambers will be standard but maybe marlin recesses the bolt head some but it still should work unless the receiver has a chamfer or not threaded far enough, but that is a marlin and this thread is about the savage axis and the barrels here should work.
