Okay, I had a great evening with that ol CVA Hawken .58cal at 50 yards!

I started with a clean bore, loaded up 70gr JSG SP, .020" patch lubed with my lube recipe, .570" round balls and topped off with a CCI #11 cap.

All balls were seated heavily on the powder as consistent as possible.

No Swabbing.

First shot was where my front sight rests, 6 o clock hold on the orange bulls eye. Next 2 were just reloading normally, no cool down.

NOW, here is where it gets interesting! I went inside to reload some tubes and watch the Packers & Chargers for a bit. That barrel cooled off for a good 10 + minutes and when I came back out, loaded up and shot, it surprised me!

She hit my first hole! Loaded up ( A couple minutes between shots), took another shot and bam! Right up there again with the other 2 shots.

Thinking I may have figured something out, I set the rifle down, went inside to watch some more football and after resting up, went out, loaded and shot again. Same thing! Ball impacted the same area at the 6 o clock position! Its the HEAT! It likes to be cooled down for a good 10 minutes.

Set the rifle off to the side once more and after another 10 minutes, reloaded, fired and while not as true as the other shots, it shows me now that it really wants a cool down!

Recovered patches from the first 3 shots,

Next 4 shots. They all have some holes and tears, I think the powder is quite a bit hotter than we all think, especially with just 70gr of powder! I use thick patches, so this was very surprising to find.

Now that the rifle is sighted in, I can run it over the Chrony without worry.

A very good, relaxing day to say the least!

Nice! Any cleaning at all with those 6 shots, any noticeable fouling in the barrel? Looked into that powder as well as American pioneer powder and they claim a crazy amount of shots before cleaning.

no cleaning was needed. I didn't have a hard time loading the bore either after all of those shots. I will test with conicals later down the road and see how that goes. Just concentrating on my round ball stuff first.

Just finished some testing with my 1860 army .44 and was amazing. Some of the best shooting I have ever done with the revolver and huuuuge amount of smoke!

Lookin' good! So a regular cap ignites that stuff just fine? I've been wanting to get another sidelock but the void of real black around here has kept me from it.

yes no hang fires or misfires as of yet.
