Please help me with velocity info. I'm loading the 158-grain 360640 solid gascheck bullet over 2400 powder for my Winchester 1892 with 20" barrel. I don't have a chronograph. Approximately what velocity am I likely to be getting with 14.0, 14.5, and 15.0 grains of 2400? The main point I'm looking for is how much velocity might gained by going from 14 grains to 15 grains.

Thanks!

I can't help you exactly with your combo but I can get you in the ballpark. Using 13.5/2400/lino 358429 I got 1689 fps out of my 20" Rossi carbine. The same loading with 12.5 grs of 2400 shows 1657 fps. The primers, cases, and bullets were the same but these were done at different times so ambient temp was probably different. Not exactly what you want but I hope it helps.
PS. Lino 358429 weigh 163 grs.

In my .357 lever-actions I have gotten much better accuracy with loads on the lower end than in trying to throttle them up. I use 12-grains of #2400 with the Hunter's Supply 190 grain FN in .357 brass and 10 grains with the bullet in .38 Special brass for use in .357 rifles and revolvers and velocity is about 1300 fps. with the plainbased bullet, which shoots well. Use same charge with the very similar Accurate bullet 36-185F.

I get a boost of almost 400FPS in 44 mag rifle w a 17 in barrel over the book data for a 7in barrel. We can only give you an idea, a chrony is almost indespensable when it comes to this sort of thing.

The problem with BBTI is that their barrel lengths don't go beyond 18 inches, they don't use any comparable bullets, the don't know what powder is used.

I'm loading the 158-grain 360640 solid gascheck bullet over <SNIP> 14.0, 14.5, and 15.0 grains of 2400?

Quickload doesn't have that boolit in the database. When I use 358311 (158gr LRN) depending on the seating depth, you are at or over near max pressure with 14 grs 2400.

Five percent more velocity can't really worth a kaboom.

You do know it's all relative to each individual weapon anyway don't you? Each firearm is it's own individual - I have a RedHawk - my friend has a RedHawk - same model, same barrel length - his consistently chrono's 100 fps faster with every ammo we tried. You want to know what's going on with your gun, do your own testing.

Artful, it is legitimate to ask for the results of other people's testing as part of working up loads. I don't see why you should be trying to shut that down. There must be several people in this forum who have chronoed loads of between 14 and 15 grains of 2400. I'd be greatly helped by hearing their results, and they would probably enjoy sharing them. Joesig, thanks for the quick load data. Old Hercules data for 158 grain over 2400 was 15.0 grains. When new Alliant data came out it was upped to 15.3 grains. How much velocity is to be gained between 14 and 15 is what I'm trying to find out. Thanks. LBS

LBS - I'm not trying to shut anything down, but trying to show resources available to you and others, and explain that what I get from my load Chrono'd from my rifle may not be what you get from yours. People sharing on this site is what we do, but I want to educate about resources that are available off this site as well. Why handicap yourself?

with the 14 grain load you should be about 1725 fps and with the 15 grain load you should be about 1825 fps. I have some Lyman data from a rifle.

I get a chrono'd 1609 fps with an extreme spread of 52 fps for 5 shots from my 18.5" Marlin .357 Model 1894 CS. The load is: 13.5 gr of new 2400, using Win Sm Pistol primers pushing Lyman's 358156 GC sized .360". I use a wheel weight alloy sweetened with a pinch of tin for mold fill out. I size in a Lyman 450 sizer, and lube with 50-50 alox/beeswax, then re-lube with White Label's 45-45-10 using the well known Lee swirl method. Leading has never been a problem...and I've shot a full box of 50 with no adverse effects.

From my carbine with a 2.5x scope mounted it will give me 1-1/4" gps at 100 yds from an improvised porch rail rest. Incidentally, this same load Chrono's 1100 fps from my S&W M60 with a 3' bbl. From that short bbl'd J-frame it's not a heck of lot of fun as a plinking load, but does quite well for carry purposes here on the farm.

There are some great responses. I'll be able to share next month when I get home. I loaded the exact same loads for my 20" model 1892 Winchester, and I'll also be testing them in my single shot HandiRifle in 357. It is not the same bullet, but a 158gr SWC plain base.
