I bought too much Blue Dot and would like to know if anybody reloads 9mm or 45acp. I use the following bullets for reloading:

Zero Bullet Company

115 gr FMJ for 9mm
230 gr FMJ for 45ACP

Any information would be great

Thanks

I have been doing 10.0gr of Blue Dot with 230gr FMJ's and getting 880fps in the 5" barrel and 980fps in the 7" barrel.
Nice even velocity strings, good grouping but it is a very dirty powder.
You will have residue all over you and the firearm.

I hate it so much I'm using it with 158gr stuff in the 38spl and 357mag.
I'm even considering using it for 45colt boolits too!

Lyman 46th Edition lists a 230gr Jacketed MC, 1.275" OAL.
7.5gr Blue Dot - 662fps - 8,700CUP
10.2gr Blue Dot - 923fps - 16,900CUP
This is out of a 5" barrel.

Thank you tsubaki at least I know I can use it up. I initially bought the Blue Dot for my magnums but I don't shoot them that much.

I have seen data using blue dot in a 45 ACP. But have never had great results w lower pressure and blue dot. Like most slower burning stuff it tends to prefer near max loads. 9mm with its higher pressure seems to work pretty good.

Thanks

With the information from posters I will use the Blue Dot with 9mm.

Try developing your load with a magnum pistol primer, bet it won't burn dirty then. Start low!

Definitely start low, especially with magnum primers.

I used to load 8.5 grains Hercules Blue Dot with a 115 grain Sierra jhp bullet; standard spp.

Only loaded 200 grain Speer "flying ashtrays" with BD; 10.4 grains BD and standard lpp.

Definitely start low, especially with magnum primers.

I had never considered doing that, come to think about it the 45acp and 38spl were the ones doing it very noticeably and I'm using magnum primers in the 357mag.
Thanks guys!

My caution is more to the point of not working up a load with standard primers and then substituting with magnum primers. You can go from nice to nasty real quick.

because the powder is better suited for higher pressures it functions in the 45 acp but ...a faster powder is usually preferred
for the 9 it's a great powder ! ermm well with jacketed anyways , it's one of the powders i recommend for the 9 mm because in most cases it's a wee hard to get an overload , it really fills up the case

You never have too much Blue Dot. I've loaded lots of 200 grain HP. Speer 45 acp. Loaded flat-out/blazing 1100 fps, with Blue Dot in new Speer nickel +P cases. They shoot great and burn very clean, but, seem warm for everyday use.

I use to use a lot of Blue Dot loads for 45ACP. It was great for teaching my two teenage sons how to use a progressive loader. As I recall it was about 9 grains of Blue Dot behind a 452374 CB. If my sons double-stroked/double charged a 45ACP case the powder would flow over everything and tell them they had double-charged and forced them to stop, check the case, and clean-up the powder mess. It worked well, as they survived the learning process and are now both adults with their own families.

Best regards,

CJR
