I have a lee mold that is throwing boolits too small for my Marlin rifle. There 309 and I need a 310. My question. Can I do the thing with a screw in the boolit and spin it in the mold using valve grinding compound as a abrasive ? If it goes 311 that would be ok. The mold is not worth that much money and could be worth a try ? I opened up a lee sizer that way ?

just make sure the screw is well centered (no wobble )
shouldnt take long to open up .002"

I put the valve grind compound to it today. Then polished with rotten stone. Now I have a 312 - 313 mold ? I feel sure I can size down to 310 or 311. Did my test cast with lino. Probably will cast a bit smaller with a softer mix.

Good to hear it worked out for you.
Aluminum molds open up fairly easy. Iron molds are pretty quick to round out an out of round cavity. But after that getting greater diameter takes quite a bit of lapping.

Yes you can do it. I have done it many times. It won't take long so stop, clean and check it often. I use 500 grit paste.

Cast about 30 to test with. It is throwing .313 , 2 gr. heaver. 178 from 176. Gas check still fits and the nose is still 300. I think I have a good mold now.

Today I run the test boolits through a .311 sizer. PC'd them, seated the checks as I run them back through the .311 sizer. They came out .310.5. ? That is probably ok if the nose is not to large. They are now .303. Going to load some dummy's tomorrow. The checks are a bear to start on the boolit but crimp on nice. If it chambers in my Marlin fine. If not I will buy a Lyman 311041. I know it will throw .312 boolits or more.
A work in progress ! lol

The nose is too large for the boolit to crimp in the groove . Only .20. I might be on to something here though . Boolits are perfectly round. Chamber and work in the action as they should. The rifle was really clean , as I said before , the owner said it had only been shot 5 times. However it had some copper fowling. Not anymore.
Hunting season is close and I might not get to the range until next spring. I am excited .
I know buying factory ammo would be a lot easier. Might have to do that in the future but this old man is hard headed. I know some have had great success with a 30 30 and I plan on it too.
A good day makes me want to ramble on so bare with me. Will up-date next spring, God willing.
