I think I have to get a 223 I have put it off for 20-30 year's. But savage model 12 are getting higher and higher , so my question is can someone tell me the difference between 12 and the newer 16 in over 30 years of shooting and loading I have never owned a savage. But I think I need one now. I have been searching the net , but that just spins my head more. I understand long and short action , light weight ,triger, and stock difference . But is it the 12 a better ,or stronger action then the 16 . Thanks for your help.

To my understanding it just has to do with the finish and options.
Double digits are short action and triple digit long action.
As for difference between 10,11,12,14,16. Same action but different barrel contour, stock finish, bolt handle, mag vs non mag etc. 10 being sort of a base model, but seems like 11s are taking that place with 10s offering more options now. 14s being more fancy finish. Oh yeah forgot 16s. There the weather warrior series.

SO...
Number Codes
110 basic long action
10 basic short action
111 hunter long action
11 hunter short action
112 Varmint long action
12 varmint short action
114 deluxe long action
14 deluxe short action
116 stainless long action
16 stainless short action

AK - Adjustable Muzzle Brake
B - Laminate Stock
BT - Laminated Thumbhole Stock
C - Clip (Detachable Box Magazine)
F - Synthetic Stock
G - Hardwood Stock
H - Hinged Floorplate

NS - No Sights
P - Police
SS - Stainless Steel
T - (Rimfire) Peep Sights

Stock you get will vary in shape depending upon expected use.
Somewhere along the line they changed triggers, Action Barrel Thread Size on some calibers (Magnum's) and distance between screws on the long actions as I remember.

Thank you very much I am looking at a 16 with 22 in beral with regular bolt not like the light weight hunter , has aku trig and stock. But if the berals and other parts are not interchangeable I would have kept looking for a good 12 action. I will save the info that makes it simple , now I can figure it out .I aprishated it.

according to ours there is only 2 sizes. If you change bolt head the hole for the pin that keeps the bolt head on bolt is differant on some.

Well I guess I am not ever going to get a 223. I can't find the package I want at the price I am after . But I found a 22-250 that seames just right , it's a fvss mold 12 with 500 rounds through it. So my question is does eanieone shoot a 22-250 and wish it was a 223 and why. I will be using for a fun informal target shooting , and would like to sit my little darling behind a light shooting rifle at the bench. She runs about 105 lb and 5.6 . And are thay ok loading down for a lighter report. A little advice from some of you hot 22ers would be aprishated thank you.

My advice would be to screw on a .250 Savage tube. Midway often has them for a bit more than $100.

Savage is cool because it's barrel is held with a lock nut - so you can swap barrels pretty easy - I have 223 rifle and 22-250 - when I used to do a lot of gray digger squirrel shooting I'd use the 223 for closer shots and 22-250 for longer and my 243 for longer yet. The biggest problem with full power larger cases with smaller bullets is throat erosion aka barrel burn out.

Oh, and my 22-250 is a swap barrel rifle, so have 243 barrel and 308 barrel and I want to have a 358 barrel made for it.

With a Savage bolt gun, you can change the bolt head between the .223/.204 Ruger family of head size and the .243/.308/30-06 class and vice versa and the same applies in magnum bolt heads.

They are rare now but Savage even made a bolt head for the long action in .223

In the Savage and Stevens lines, the long action bolt heads and the short action ones will not interchange.

In the Axis lines ...... I believe that there is but one bolt head family ........ but I am not positive on that.

Anyway there is much you can do with the Savage and Stevens lines (and for that matter the Axis as well) .... personally, I am just a much bigger fan of the first two.

Look up the Savage shooters forum .....

yup, that is what I got a 111 action with bolt heads for magnum, 08-06 class and 223 . I missed a bolt head for 7.62x39 but intend to get one of those yet. These sav chassis are slick!

Actually if you looked at all the barrels that have found me ...... you would likely call it an addiction! ......... but I would not trade the experience for anything!

Best regards

I am still looking for the right one. Might have better luck after Christmas and hunting season. It always gets complicated , started out looking at model 16 light weight hunter but don't like the bolt cut out . So I decided to go with the model 12 , than of course stanles , now I need a 26 in beral , ackutriger, lament on and on . When I started I just wanted 20 in blued fun gun with a polished bolt to shoot down loaded l.c. brass as a hot 22 mag with cast . It gets complicated. Might have to get two guns , going to be hard to explain that to my wife. Going through this because a buddy gave me some l.c. brass for 223 .

Yep, she'll buy that - show her the cost of a box of 22 mag - vs. free home made lead boolits and small powder charge and primer cost.

I have bought several rifles from Gander Mountain. One their website they have lots of new and used guns. I found several used rifles For good prices. I got a Savage model 11 in .243 to put a midway 250 Savage barrel on. $349 + 25 handling fee. Buy online, they ship to nearest store, you pick up.
I found a Stevens 200 in .223 $249.
