I've got a box of trapdoor parts coming in the mail shortly minus the original stock. Doing a websearch today for a replacement stock and I found a webpage that stated that a Hawken Rifle stock could be used with no modifications to the Trapdoor's metal.

Has anyone seen one of these refits and how does it shoot if they've fired it. The trapdoor that I have coming is in 50-70 and is an 1870 model so I'm hoping its an easy drop-in.

Thanks,

Bruce

I think you will become very familiar with wood chisels and inletting black. I also wonder about the barrel channel, (I think it will be too big). If you are really looking for a drop-in fit, I would suggest looking for a Civil War rifle stock; probably a Springfield, not sure any of the others will be close enough.

On the plus side, a Hawken style stock will allow you to make a pseudo Gemmer.

Eagerly awaiting pictures of the project,

Robert

I really like Gemmer Trapdoors but a TP will not drop into a standard Hawken stock but you can purchase Gemmer style Hawkens stocks for TD's

would it be considered sacrilege to glass-bed the Trapdoor... ;)

I'd shoot it first, and see how it performs. I friend of mine kind of specializes in making Gemmer-ized TDs. Pretty cool guns.

If you decide to stick with the Springfield stock....

the glassbed response was tongue in cheek regarding the depth of the hawken barren channel in comparison to the trapdoor barrel.

Those Gemmer stocks look beautiful.

This would be a very nice conversion!

M-Tecs - thanks for the links, very interesting. I have a very nice and complete M1866 Springfield barreled action just crying out for a new stock.

Thanks for the new rabbit hole!. I had never heard of a Gemmer before, stayed up way past bedtime last night and most of the day figuring out how to make my 1873 into a Gemmer. That is one beautiful rifle.
