Man. I heard these things are tough, but the grip of this barrel is stronger than I've ever experienced. How do you remove a Ruger barrel off a vaquero/blackhawk?

Anything wrong with my setup?

The grip on the barrel is really good. Or seems such. If it gives up at all (something has to give, the frame isn;t!) then the barrel clicks loudly when it slips.

Not sure what I can do. Choke up on the barrel even more? I'm at the point of smashing the HDPE insert.

Depending upon when the gun was made, the barrel is probably cemented on with 242 Loctite, which is intended to prevent migration of solvents into the threads. It is removable, but doing so will require application of heat and finesse.

Just like pulling a Remington 700 if you have done any of those.

Thanks. Got it loose. For me, the best helper was choking up on the barrel a little more, just that smidge more pressure on the barrel was enough to let me break it.

Next time, set it up in the vise so that the wrench is horizontal, at 9:00. This way you can put your weight into it, not your muscle. A 200 pound man leaning into it. Even a cheater bar, not too long.

Whiterabbit what are you going to do with the barrel now?

Be a good time to do the forcing cone or even Taylor throat it!

actually, you can see it in the pic, what I will do. OEM aluminum EJRH at the top, cimmaron cam cut steel 3.5" EJRH in the middle. The 7.5" barrel already has the practice dovetail in it for the new front sight, patridge style blade.

It's going to be a sherriff model, cut just past the EJRH, new birdshead gripframe, SBH hammer, dovetailed patridge style front sight, rust blued, turnbull CCH frame (I hope), vermillion or horn-of-some-sort grip panels, freespin pawl, and new cylinder latch if I feel like tightening up the action. Oh, remove the banner on the side of the barrel.

This is the vaquero cylinder that you DIDN'T hone the cylinders for me on. That one already has a SBH hammer and I get to shoot while I work on this one. The benefit of buying matched pairs of guns. So I can shoot one while the other one is in pieces :) :).

Maybe if I feel balsy I will chamfer the cylinder. But not likely. I think the barrel work will be enough for me on this project.
