Reading the thread on the new Ruger precision rifle got me thinking of a "budget" long range target gun that can also be suitable for deer. What are your thoughts of the cartridge and the gun/cartridge combo? Shots at targets up to 1000yds and deer to 400 at the longest. Budget will be around $2200-2500 and would end up being a Christmas present to myself. Feel free to place scope/ring/base recommendations too.

I love the caliber and chose it in a Savage Lady Hunter year before last for my wife. It shoots @1/2" MOA and is a flat shooting round since that is what it was designed for. She has been shooting it a pretty good bit this year and ready to take some deer and hogs but no first hand knowledge on how effective it will be. It is cheaper to buy the factory ammo when you find it on sale than to buy the components separate. Recoil is mild and I like it and was thinking about the DPMS chambered in it but changed my mind as it is a brass I would not want to have to chase or loose. I personally decided I will go .308 when I do now just because of brass. There are others that make brass from compatible cases but not what I was interested in.

I just changed out a Savage 112 from a 22-250 to the Creedmoor and couldn't be happier! It shoots to .75 at 100 yds so far. haven't really broken it in yet, and still working up loads for it. It should do very well with the 140 gr. loads. I picked up some Hornady 123 gr. factory from Academy for 18.00 per box. That was cheaper than buying empty cases and loading them. Like the lessened recoil and am anxious to try it at longer ranges. Our range goes to 1000 m and this should be fun when you cannot see the targets! (Maybe I am getting a little old to try, but try I will!!)

i have a 6.5cm in tc encore with a 16 1/4" MGM barrel. i killed a couple/several deer with this gun, all go 50 yard or less. i loaded up some 120gr nosler bt with some superformance and it goes .3" at 100 yards(3 shots).
i'm really thinking of making a new barrel for the encore, a 25" MGM barrel, and then it will do either targets or long range deer rifle. i'm deciding on the 140gr nosler bt or 140gr hornady sst.
the recoil in the 16 1/4" barrel sort of jumps off the target, i am assuming that it will(using a 25" barrel) stay on the deer/target.

i'd say do it.

I had a 6.5-06 for many years and got excited when this round came out then I remembered there is a awesome swede in 6.5x55 in the back corner and the thoughts subsided. If no swede I would have a 6.5 creedmore!

I built a 6.5 Creedmoor two years ago and I will say its a great round for a light recoil and a flat shooting bullet to boot. I've taken it out to 300 yards with iron sights and I'm sure if the rifle was scoped it be even better.

I wish brass was more commonly available. It isn't the cartridge the 256 Newton is or even the 6.5x257 Improved, IMO, but it is available in modern guns with the proper twist.

i haven't tried it yet but take 22-250 case and neck it up to 6.5(.264) and then you have a 6.5 cm.

I will own one, someday. Would prefer a Ruger or Remington but in all likelihood it will be a second hand Savage that has been rebarreled. Around here you can usually scrape up a used non-Accutrigger 110 in .270 or .30'06 for under 3 bills. Surprisingly I've seen alot of long action 110's chambered in .243 as well. Question, for the handloader is it actually better to have a Creedmoor with the long action? I'm glad my .257 Roberts is a long action having read the myriad frustrations of this cartridge in a short action rifle with a long throat.
