Hi:

I am looking for a load for my Uberi Cattleman in 44-40.

Both a cast boolit and the powder charge.

Thanks,

Terryt

You can't go wrong duplicating the original load. A soft cast Lyman 427098 over 33-35 gr of Swiss or Old Eynsford 2F.

I would first first remove the cylinder from your Cattleman and take some soft, pure lead round balls and drop in the chambers from the breech end, support the cylinder on a bench block and tap them through and out the front of the cylinder throats and measure them. THAT is the diameter to size you bullets to.

Don't worry about slugging your barrel, a waste of time. CYLINDER throat size is what matters. If you want to buy bullets and not cast them, I like Matt's bullets and have great results with them in my .44-40s. Your Uberti Cattleman will shoot well with 200-215 grain bullets probably of .430" diameter and 6.5 to 7 grains of Bullseye or 7.0 to 8.0 of W231 or WST or 7.5 to 8.5 of Unique.

If you want to cast your own, the Accurate 43-215C is the bullet of choice for the .44-40 if using Black powder and will also work with smokeless. If you have no intent in using blackpowder, the Accurate 43-230G is a double-crimp groove design with good large meplat, for a heavy hunting bullet which works well in the .44-40, .44 Special and .44 Magnum. The same charges will work in your Uberti Cattleman, with a 230-grain bullet, but it will be a stout load.

I use 4.5 Trail Boss with a .428 200 FN, nice fun shooting load, good nuff for just about anything, CAS, hunting close range, home defense.
