By now I expect most everyone has heard about the terrible tragedy/crime at the college here in Oregon. I have a very good friend who is an officer with a responding agency, and I heard that they exchanged fire with the scum-of-the-earth lunatic shooter. Please pray for his safety.

All politics aside please; right now I'm just worried about my friend, and heartsick for those who lost loved ones today. I know a lot of people in the area.

A gunman opened fire on Thursday at a community college in Oregon, killing 13 people and wounding some 20 others, in the latest mass killing to rock a U.S. school, officials and local media said.

There were conflicting reports on the number of casualties and wounded at Umpqua Community College. The state's attorney general told the local NBC affiliate that 13 people had been slain, 20 wounded and the shooter was killed.

The suspect was not identified but CNN reported it was a man in his late 20s.

Douglas County Commissioner Chris Boice said the shooting left about 30 casualties, but he could not immediately say how many of those people died and how many were injured.

The shooting is the latest incident of gun violence in the United States, raising demands for more gun control and more effective treatment of the mentally ill. Recent episodes of gun violence include the massacre of nine people at a South Carolina church last spring and the killing of five U.S. servicemen in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

CNN reported that one of the wounded was a female who had been shot in the chest. The Oregonian said that at least six patients were critically injured in the shooting, citing an official with Life Flight.

The Douglas County Sheriff's office said on Facebook that officers had responded to a shooting at the college following 911 calls at 10:38 a.m. local time.

Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg said on Facebook that the hospital had received nine patients from the shooting and had been advised that three more were en route.

"Please continue to pray," the hospital said.

Local media reported that authorities were combing through the campus, which serves more than 13,000 students, 3,000 of them full-time. Fall term began at the college on Monday.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said students and faculty members were being bused to the nearby fairgrounds where they could be picked up.

President Barack Obama was briefed on the shooting by Lisa Monaco, his homeland security adviser, a White House official said.

The FBI said agents were responding from offices in Medford, Eugene, Salem and Portland.

The Oregonian said agents from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were also en route to Roseburg, a city of about 20,000 people some 260 miles (418 km) south of Portland.

I can't imagine the horror and suffering of those involved and their friends and family. I do know a bit about what the first responders are facing and thank God there are still people willing to run towards carnage like this to do what needs doing. All I can offer at this time is my prayers. I'm a little (OK, a lot!) disappointed in Obummer (and others) making this a political even before the bodies are even cold. That said, if you think for a minute the anti-gunners weren't waiting for an event like this to launch their next offensive on our rights you're lying to yourself or just not paying attention.

TXGunNut sums up my feelings on this tragedy. It's a shame that the administration is already using this tragedy to push for "gun control" . Gun free zones encourage this type of murderous rampage because the coward doing the killing knows that his victims are unarmed. Just think how different the outcome might have been if individuals with carry permits had their legal handguns with them and had been able to stop the carnage. This scenario keeps replaying: a psychopath commits multiple murders in a venue where the victims have been unarmed by misguided laws and regulations. And don't think for one minute that the cowardly killer did not know that he was in a gun free zone and he took advantage of this fact. Same thing happened at Virginia Tech and many others.

Bill O'reilly interviewed a veteran that was in class that is also a CCW holder. He was carrying yesterday. Said he had his Glock 40 with him. He said he wanted to go try to stop that shooter, was told by someone to return to his classroom and stay there. Apparently the Umpqua campus is an open campus as far as CCW goes. Not surprising that a veteran would want to run TO the fight instead of hiding under a desk.

Now the Glock 40 is a full size in 10mm, hardly a concealed carry favorite. I suspect he meant a .40 like the G-27, a subcompact.

Lee, that "chimp-in-chief" is a good one. (can I borrow it?) I watched the POtoS when he came out really mad about the shootings. As animated as I've ever seen him. I am sure some are, others are just more active than parents or teachers like to deal with. Families do not tell kids to go out and play anymore, kids for the most part don't have chores to burn off steam, so many thar not comfy for being a couch potato cooped up all the time in front of a tv or computer winds up on drugs. Many many parents will not bust a kids behind, lots even think it is against the law, so kids do not learn to behave as well as some did (at least around my house) and wind up on drugs to control what a good butt busting would have taken care of a few years earlier.

I was acquainted with 2 men in past years that both committed suicide....both were on heavy medications for bi polar and unfortunately were drinking at the same time...(not together..the incidents were a couple of years apart).

The first man waited in hiding for his Wife to return from a meeting in the evening...he had a hammer and had written a suicide note...she came in and he beat her nearly to death and then hung himself.

The other man went into his garage...left a note...waited until the kids on the way to junior hi were in front of his garage...opened the door and stepped off a table and hung himself right in front of the kids.

This kind of thing goes on all the time...and the doctors just keep on prescribing more and more drugs....the list in the earlier part of this thread is something that Obama and company ignore and won't even acknowledge...it's all about gun control...think back over the places that have been run by madmen and the first thing they did was to control all weapons...Obama is a madman and the lousy media is so busy sucking up to him they can't see what is happening...we are being disarmed to allow for an insane group of Socialist madmen to take over what's left....I'm an old man and frankly I'm glad my days are limited....I've seen the good and the bad may be just a bit down the road and I might get out before it is all over.

Why are Schools in many cases targeted,is there a connection with perpetrators being dissatisfied or traumatised during their learning years.I should imagine that mental experts will be analysing why a young person would embark on such a horrific rampage.How could anyone predict such an event,Perhaps it is a case for School Police Personel on all campus.At least it might cut down the toll.

One of the main things is the immediate media coverage of things like this..no question there is more violence these days but I think back to the days of Manson, Chales Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate (Starkweather and Fugate killed 11 people...more than the Oregon murders). We didn't have "on the scene" coverage as the shootings were taking place but the crimes were just as terrible...I also think the mass media attention, the Obama decrees, etc are breeding conditions for copy cat action. Mental illness and drug problems are known to many long before someone snaps but they are "covered up" and enabled until we have a blow up.

It's not just schools..it is for now, probably because of gun free zones being easy targets for nut cases but how about the huge rash of post office rage and murder incidents some years back or the work place incidents? Not associated with schools at all. I live near a junior high school and it's a gun free zone...my thought is if that's the case they should have the whole campus locked down and armed guards at every door...someone want's to get in without ID the get stopped and nobody get's in after the "bell rings" unless they have full ID and are escorted.

It would never happen because of the blood lust of the media and the libtards but how about in the case of some tragedy like this...nobody..I mean nobody reports, is "on scene", names names or glorifies the actions...just not say anything? The nut cases would soon find out that they are not getting any attention and might turn to other things.

Well I bought that 4064 yesterday that I mentioned earlier but honestly I was going to buy it anyway, although admittedly it probably would not have happened yesterday if this thing hadn't of happened. The lady behind the counter at one shop I went to was out of 4064 and told me that yes indeed sales had "surged" since the news broke but the next (and a much bigger place) told me that they had not really noticed any increase at all but that customers (such as I was doing) had been asking about it. In any case they had a good stock of powders on the shelf and I only bought the one pound of AA4064 that I needed, at $32 + sales tax bringing it to over $35 a pound it didn't seem like the time to be stocking up!

Anyone else notice any signs of panic buying this time?
