Although it seems the use of Unique in .45-70 is common, do any of the "main" manuals actually list any Unique loads? Don't think I have ever seen any listed, but I have not seen all the manuals either.

Thanks.

Lyman #45 has a large selection as do most of the older manuals.

Lyman #3 has at least 6 pages of load data for that cal for Unique. Many of those have been dropped in the newer version. (lawyers?????????).

Get a #3 and you will be covered. It is almost mandatory for what we do. Repros are available for a very reasonable cost from Cornells.

There are literally millions of combinations of loads. Since they have to test the newer powders the older powders drop off. You see it a lot more with the faster pistol and shotgun powders since most of the newer powders fall into that group but it the same for the new high performance rifle powders. Too add something new something old has too go.

I took quite a lecture at the range on the weekend over this subject. A fellow shooter was concerned that ten grains of Unique could detonate in my .45-70 as I hadn't used a filler.

Has anyone ever heard of that happening? With Unique that is - I know it's possible with low charges of some powders but didn't think it was an issue with this one?

I shot that load with a couple of friends for an entire summer and nothing happened. I got the same lecture from another member who managed to blow his rifle up but couldn't say for sure why it happened.
Double-check everything, just like with any other load, you'll be fine.

I don't find the "flashover detonation" theories some have about fast powders in large cases to be at all credible. Powder strung horizontally along the case gives less velocity and pressure due to the fact the primer flash does not strike it as directly.

Shoot unique without filler in my 45/70 but always use .5grain dacron with 2400 ,works for me and accurate too!

Over 20,000 loaded since 1972 for trapdoors. No issues.
