I know this is strictly not a cast bullet but was hoping someone could help me identify the markings on this military case please......

I believe it's an 8mm - possibly Turkish origin and I know it came from WW1....now the brass appears somewhat shorter than other 7.92 Mil rounds I have and here are the specs as I measured them:

Projectile diameter at case mouth = 7.85mm
Brass length = 53.36mm
COAL = 76.04mm

The projectile to me looks like one of the nickle jacketed rounds so common for that era as with most of the German 7.92/8mm rounds but I will not pull it to see whether it's powder or cordite inside.....will be left intact

I did polish it up a tad to allow a photo of the markings but is in quite good condition with just a couple of surface blemishes only...

Can any of you learned people offer a translation or ID of the markings please....?.....thanks149763149764

Thanks lefty o,

have had a suggestion that it could actually be 7.65 x 53mm round for the 1890 Turkish Mauser - hopefully a translation will give me more info as am not familiar with that round at all..................certainly a mystery

That makes sense to me.

7.85mm = .309"
53.36mm = 2.1"
76.04mm = 2.993"

Here's a link that seems to confirm your friend's speculation.

I see that you are "down under" so I bet one of your Diggers brought it back from Galipoli as a souvenir.

Thankyou gents....yes Scharfschuetze it was brought back from Gallipoli - I have it's history from where it was 'collected' but never knew it's markings...I recently was told that the writing may say "Small mauser" or similar though it's still a translation work in progress....

Thanks Rattlesnake Charlie - in my www searches, never came across that link and appreciate you posting and at least I have an understanding now of what it says...appreciate your help

................I'd say for sure it's a 7.65 x 53 right off the bat just seeing that short neck.
