Check out 4D rentals. They rent the kit and have a video of using it. Good stuffs..

This is the kit you want to rent. It comes with brass pilots for pistol calibers, barrel squaring cutter, crown cutter, about $450 worth of tooling but all you need is the 11° cutter, the rod, the centering cone, tee handle and the proper sized pilot for your caliber. There is also a brass lap in the kit that is designed to be used to polish, but the instant you slap lapping compound on it, the compound imbeds into the brass and now you are cutting grooves just like the grooves you used the cutter to get RID OF!

Instead, cut a small rectangle of fine Scotch Brite, 1/2" wide, 1 1/2" long, poke a hole in the center of it, hold it at the forcing cone, push the threads of the rod through it, screw the brass lap on, fold it over the lap and push the whole works into the newly cut forcing cone, twist the tee handle a few times NOW you got a real nice polish job with no grooves in it..

Note.. There are gauges for forcing cone that you can get from Brownell's that basically show when to stop so you don't overdo it. I never used the gauges. The goal is to get to the tops of the lands *IF* you can, without making the bore at the fire ring any larger than it already is from the factory! Here is my own personal 7 1/2" SBH, the factory forcing cone was a collection of concentric tool marks arranged in a tapered fashion. Ya right.. I got lucky on this one and the new 11° cut went all the way to the tops of the lands and didn't make the fire ring any thinner.. They won't all come out nice like this, some of them won't let you get to the tops of the lands before it starts cutting too much at the fire ring. You have to stop before it makes this area thinner.. Use PLENTY of Tap Magic, take the cutter out OFTEN and clean the sharff off and inspect. If you haven't done any of these, SNEAK up on it, that cutter works quite fast!

I need to do this to my Ruger Super Blackhawk hunter in 41 mag. Right now it is more a circular file than a forcing cone.
It is hard to understand why the guns are produced with bad forcing cones and crowns when it would be so easy to not do this?! This is like a car manufacturer building the engines with lousy honing of the cylinders.

I usually take in these jobs but my local FFL has been a major PITA about return shipping so it makes it too costly to send it. Sucks...

Thanks DougGuy, that's what I was looking for..I seen the video but had a tough time finding that web site... Why? I don't know.

I hopefully can make an improvement to the grinding/ machine rings that this gun has.

I thought you did this kind of work and understand your frustration with shipping..It sure would be nice if I could find someone that can do this, but no one around here does this work except one gunsmith and he ain't fun to coordinate my schedule with his to get it done. He is very good, so that means he is very busy.

Leadman- Ain't that so true
