I've used lots of different boolits from 155 to 200 grains to take Md whitetail. Favorites are 3ii466 &467, 311o41. All started at 2000 fps to 2300 fps. What ever powder gets that with decent accuracy. I always test for accuracy AND penetration prior to hunting.

311041 cast of COWWs + 25 tin then mixed 50/50 with lead, AC'd, sized .311, Hornady GCs and lubed with 50/50 lube. Loaded over 4895 (any flavor) with a 3/4 gr Dacron filler to a velocity of 2100 fps out of 24" barrels with 10" twists. The Lyman HP stem has been shortened so the HP is 3/16" deep. I clean the barrels every 7 or 8 shots to maintain best accuracy which is fine fine for hunting. Same bullet for practice and zero is cast of straight COWWs + 2% tin and WQ'd. Same load. I can shoot those all day long w/o barrel cleaning and maintain 1 1/2 - 2 moa at 200 yards.

I have killed id don't know how many deer with that bullet at pretty much that velocity out of numerous .30 caliber rifles over the last 47 years. However, recent tests with 14" twist barrels demonstrated that the 311041 will shoot very nicely at 2500+ fps. I have not shot anything with that bullet at that velocity yet but if expected ranges are in the 150 - 300 yards range and you are building/rebarreling then a 26" barrel with a 14" twist chambered in '06 is well worth looking at.

The first Ranch Dog .30-30 mold ( I think it's the 311-165-RF) has become my go to cast bullet for anything .30 and it's going to be hard to replace since it works so well in everything I've tried. He's changed it since then and it's a 170gr bullet now and you can order it from NOE now.

That load of 18 grs of Unique should get approx. 1800 fps.

For over 30 years I have used both the Lee C309-180 RN and C309-170 FP (50-50 alloy of wheel weights and linotype metal), Hornady gas checks, NRA-Alox lube applied in a .309 sizer die, with 30.0 grains H335 or BL-C2 (as available, they are nearly identical), standard primers, 2.0 grains tuft of loose Dacron fiber fill over the powder charge, light crimp at the crimping groove. This load just about duplicates factory .30-30 performance. I have used these in a dozen different rifles ('03 and 03-A3 Springfields, Remington & Winchester bolt actions, Ruger #1) over the years. Always shoots as accurately as I am capable of shooting. Has taken multiple Colorado mule deer at ranges to 100 yards with one shot kills every time. Also does a nice job of dispatching coyotes without tearing up the hides (they used to be pretty valuable, not so much anymore).

Case life appears to be indefinite. Have a couple of hundred cases dedicated to modest pressure cast bullet loads that have been reloaded dozens and dozens of times with no signs of ever wearing out.

Interesting bit of information: I use exactly the same loads (powder charge, bullets, etc) in .30-30, .30-40 Krag, and .308 Winchester. Equally effective in all.

Should run 1875 - 1950 fps depending on barrel length and other variables.

Just be certain the powder IS 4759, not4756. Could be a bad mistake to use the wrong one!

I do this really cool thing called second guessing

It's where I go hardcore ocd and check powder like 11 times to make sure the right type and charge goes in the case... but then again, it's why my craftsmanship is so superior fir my age

I apologize for not answering, I did not see your question until just now. I have not gotten around to chronoing either load that I posted, but as jh mentioned, that is with SR4759, not SR4756.

Both loads are very comfortable on the shoulder for extended bench time, be it paper, rocks, or gongs,,,,,,,,,.

Seeing the last two posts were for the 311284, I looked at my book, remembered I saved a scrap of target the first time I tried the 284 in the -06, 5 shots touching, 1 more shot thrown .5" off, 54.0 gr. WC872 at 50 yards. I've meant to try the NOE 311-195 FN to replace the 284,,,,,,,,,

33gr IMR 3031 and an RCBS 30-180 gave me pretty good accuracy for just throwin' a load together real quick. Minute of tuna can (or copenhagen, for those who chew) can at 100yds for a quick 5 shot group.

This bullet at 2,000 fps. Pick your poison for powder.

I've used AA4064, H4895 and IMR 7828.

For less trauma on the buttstock end to punch paper. Lyman 311672 over 28.0 grains of Rx7. That's a 160 grain bullet at 1,900 fps.

.......a friend at a gunshop today asked me if i could ask who loves what in the 06 for hunting...

For hunting deer or such in numerous 30-06 rifles with 10" twist barrels of 20 - 26" I've always favored the Lyman 311041 HP'd to 3/16" deep. I cast it of COWWs + 2% tin and then mix 50/50 with lead. I let the bullets AC for a minimum of 7 - 10 days and then GC (Hornady's) and lube (NRA 50/50 or Lar's 2500+) in a .311 H&I die in a Lyman 450. Mine weight 177 gr fully dressed. I load them over 29 - 30 gr of 4895 depending on flavor of powder and barrel length. A 3/4 gr Dacron filler is used. Velocity will run 1850 - 2000 fps again depending on barrel length. I use a clean barrel as best accuracy will hold for 7 - 8 shots; usually less than 2 moa to 200 yards.

I have killed quite a few deer with that bullet at that velocity with quite a few of them being from 30-06s.

I personally like a Lee 170 GR FNGC over 31 Grains of 5744 for 2100 FPS chronographed. I use liquid alox and get no leading at all. I generally run straight WW for this as well. I can get 1.5" at 125 yds if I do my part. Definitely good enough for deer.
