Hi:

I have a Model 92 Winchester made in 1901 in excellent condition.

In factory ammo that is loaded with lead boolits is the boolit made of purelead or is it alloyed.

What ratio of lead to tin could be used to obtain good groups and not hurt thebarrel?

I shot both Winchester and Remington factory loads and they both grouped 2-3inches at 50 yards from a rest.

I am going to start casting boolits soon and I am looking for a good alloy recipefor boolit’s that will give groups and not harm the bore.

Thanks,

Terry

In my .44-40 I use 1:40 tin-lead from Roto Metals and load a compressed caseful of RL7, as if loading black powder. Full velocity, no leading and my most accurate load, ten-shot 3" groups at 100 yards with Accurate 43-230G.

This is a good question. My Winny 94 from 1897 has been fed COWW so far, I could probably switch it to 50/50 WW/Pb if there is any cause for concern. 311041 over a mild charge of 3031, if that makes any difference.

Terryt, fwiw, I use 50/50 WW/Pb for all of my pistol caliber work, but they likely would have used something between 40:1 and 20:1 in factory amunition when that rifle was new, so something like that should be a safe bet. I fully expect that some more experienced member will come along and assure us that just about any lead alloy will have a heck of a time doing any harm to our barrels. But that worry is always there in the back of your mind.

Winchester and Remington used 20-1 and 40-1 for a lot of stuff back In the day. [probably still do]

in all my old and new rifles I just use clip-on ww and stick on ww alloy mixed together.
I worry more about diameter and boolit design than bhn.
