Do you really need a special air rifle scope or will a center-fire rifle scope work?

A Leupold VX-3 is the only CF scope I would have confidence in for use with RWS M48, 52 and 54s. I went through 4 other air rifle rated scopes before finding that out. The "EF" 3x9 and 6.5x20 are excellent choices for those rifles.

To answer your question, yes you do, with that said, what model RWS are you asking about?

I recently got a really nice older RWS scope off fleabay for $50. I had a real nice compact Burris on my RWS 54 (22 cal), that I wanted to put on a CF rifle. Anyway, I put that RWS scope on the RWS 54...it had stood up to the punishment so far.

I have an RWS model 34 in .22 caliber. I use the scope that came with it, an RWS branded scope in a fixed four power. It's made in China and is not an expensive scope but it is clear and has given good accuracy for 4 thousand plus rounds through it.

I've had dozens of scopes on springers, and the above advice is all good. High end Bushnells and Leupolds will hold up, low end won't. Other than that one needs a scope special made for spring guns. If you want an inexpensive scope that will hold up, buy a Leapers or a Centerpoint..walmart carries them and they are sturdy but do suffer from heavy weight, poor eye relief, poor FOV and in spite of them holding poi i just don't care for em. Hawke is above and beyond my favorite, they are great in most respects but can get pricey depending on the model. My all around favorite is the Hawke sport HD 3x9x40AO which used to be under 100.00 bucks, not sure what they run now. This scope is light, bright and hold poi no matter how "magnum" the spring gun is. Its a heck of a deal in my opinion. The 2x7x32 is a gem too for general plinking and hunting. The Rws and beeman scopes are also serviceable. Here is my 2x7x32 Hawke on an old favorite rws 34.(utg mounts) Make sure and go with strong mounts, look for UTG\leapers\centerpoint for the very best at very fair prices. I get most of mine from Pyramyd Air.

Springer air rifle have a forward recoil impact from the piston. alot of rifle scopes arnt set up for the forward recoil and it eats them fairly quickly. Use one rated for air rifles to be safe.

the 2 worst problems with air rifle scopes are. The forward recoil and the focusing distance or parallex. Most rifle scopes have parallex set way to far in distances .True air gun scopes are set up for practical air gun distances. Les.

A straight 4X air rifle rated scope would/is my choice for that RWS. Recoil isn't as bad as the magnum level .177s. A straight 4X has plenty of magnification and has a lot less to rattle loose in it than a variable. I chose a Simmons 4X to go on my R9 .20 cal and it is holding up quite well and has all the magnification needed.
