today i grabbed my encore and headed out to the shop. i took with me some reloaded shells that are 280gr ranch dog and reloader 7. the 444 proved again that it does NOT like a certain boolit and powder. the other three are ok, but it definitly does NOT care for it!!!
it was 80+/- deg, past shoulder pad is on, tc encore with 23" MGM barrel topped off with a leopuld 3-9x. distance is 100 yards

all right, the 444 and the 280gr ranch dog with reloader 7....the ones that are l out are 39.0gr

the first is, to my shame, is NOT the one i wanted. its 39.0gr of rel 7, and i never ever thought that a boolit would be this bad. i expected a 2 -3" load, but this is ridiculus. there are two in the pic and one that happened to explode against the rail road track(keeps the wood and target from following over). i stopped right away and thought either this is the worst cases of leading the barrel or something came loose. checked the barrel, no leading. ok, i checked the scope, nuthin loose. alright, i better have a cup of coffee and figure out what went wrong.
after i thought about it, found nuthih wrong, i decided to go back to shooting. i put three of them in the same hole and screwed up on the fourth one. 41.0gr of rel7 sure seems right!!! the little 39.0gr seems like it never happened. i'm going to measure this one with a caliper but it looks like a 1/2+". makes h4198 look real bad!

the 41.5gr is really good, looks like an inch. the 42.0gr is good, looks like a 1 1/4- 1 1/2". the fourth one(actually first 42.0gr) was shot into the wood because i don't know my right from left while doing the scope!!! now don't you forget, this is a 150 yard deer/black bear load. any of these three(see, i already forgot about it!!!) loads will take a deer/bear out. i am curious about the 41.5gr load. i know the 41.0gr is a half inch, but that extra .5gr might be what calls for. if anybody does have a quickload, i would really appericate the velocity on the 41 and 41.5grs.

i found a little sumthin sumthin, that you might be able to share.....

i usually check to see if i can find bullets that have been shot out. in roughly 12" +/- of railroad ties, i found a 280gr ranch dog. i'm going to measure and weigh it, which i'll put on this forum. i found it hanging on to the back of a railroad tie, just waiting there to be picked up. i have been wanting to find one without tearing the ties apart. probably couldn't do it, but it sure would be fun to watch a fat, stroke-abled guy rip apart railroad ties!!!http://www.marlinowners.com/forum/images/smilies/new/biggrin.gif

i used the caliper and got .730" outside to outside. minus the .215"(.430" boolit) it comes to .515". not too shabby!

the one used for h4198(40.0gr) the caliper says .851" outside to outside. minus the .215" comes to .636". doin real good thar!!!

now for the boolit.

i weighed it and it comes to 207.1 gr. the outside edge(furthest one) is .684".

oh, i almost forgot!!! the 280gr rd is about 12-13 bhn(i bought them from carolina). the rel 7 seems like it kicks a lot LESS than h4198. i should have kept going, but i felt that 42.0gr would really kick me. but it does not, so i quit loading them. now that i know, i can go up a few grains until it starts to hurt, well, its hard to keep on a primos bipod!!!http://www.marlinowners.com/forum/images/smilies/new/biggrin.gif

If you want to measure center to center groups, deduct a full diameter from the outside measurements. That would be half diameter from each outside bullet hole for a total of one whole diameter. Sorry but, you have to deduct another half a diameter from your groups.

Never used RL7, but JUST found out my 30-30 likes it a lot with 150 grn bullets! Hoping the 45-70 likes it for cast.

it should!!! i use it in my 20 vartarg in jacketed bullets and my 30-40 krag(165gr ranch dog) and my handi rifle in 45-70(405gr fbfn). if rel7 doesn't work(not likely) use h4198. its also a great powder.

tdoyka--I use the MP-433-300HP and 45g of Reloder 7 in my .444 Marlin and get good accuracy and the velocity is around 2200 fps. However, I heat treat my boolits to Bhn 22.
