Broke my second one in 8 months. The cast metal body cracks where the tube enters the bottom of the body and then stops flaring cases. I am using a powder through funnel with a plug that has a diameter of 358 made for me by lathesmith. What is misadjusted?

Sounds like you have it adjusted too low.

Does it break using the factory expander?

My bet is no. How about some lube on the brass so your not putting as much stress on the factory parts due to your aftermarket one.

I do lube the tip of the expander every 15 to 20 rounds or so. I have it adjusted to where it just slightly bells the case. Problem is, it stops belling the case after a few thousand rounds. I adjustex it lower to get the same bell and then it breaks.

What lube would you use on the cases? Just a spray lube?

Is every thing tight? Sounds like something is loose and causing wear.

Yeah everything is tight. I looked closer at the expander. The part of the plug that bells the case is a concave curve, more like the top of a soda bottle. The factory expander plug is concave, more like a trumpet bell. And it has rings on it from wear. I think the brass is hanging up on it. I talked to lathesmith and we are gonna see about working that out.

Likely already broken at that point.

If you have problems with the factory expander Dillon will replace it for free. Or you can keep having them replace parts you are breaking because of a part they didn't make.

Once it's adjusted to bell the case where you want it, you shouldn't have to touch it again (unless your brass length changes). I've not changed my powder die setting since I first set it up. I setup the powder dump so that the bellcrank cube is at maximum travel when the shell plate is fully raised.

f you have to make an adjustment several thousand rounds later, I suspect it's already cracked or flexed. Adjusting it down, just adds more stress to the weakened part, then it breaks.

I have loads years on the same toolhead with the only adjustment being powder and bullet depth.

The factory expander only expands to .353 and caused the case to swage boolits down to an unusable size. When I talked to lathesmith this afternoon and showed him what I was looking at on the two funnels I think we got the problem licked. I'll be picking up the funnel on wednesday and we will see how it'll work.
