View Full Version : formula for determining velocity, of a known boolit and powder etc.

I have loaded some 145 grain hornady ftx boolits for my .35 contender pistol and know there is a formula out there to plug in the numbers and extract the velocity, energy etc. It has been an accurate mix and devastating on chucks. Figure it might pan out for white tails. Does anyone know where I can find it? Thanks

dunno about a formula but i can try to run it in quickload for you. Need cartridge oal bullet length powder charge etc.

apart from a chronograph the only other way I can tell is by putting the bc of the projectile into a ballistics program and matching the velocity to bullet drop.
eg sightin at 50 and drop at 100 then 300yrds.
Works for me.
The old paper calculating charts worked good to but were more of place pencil here ...draw line to x or maybe y then take a corresponding reading from piont b and where they cross.
Draw another line where they cross perpendicular to you reach the kln curve.
Read the value at that point and times that by the tangental/length/ coefficiant by calibre calculation.

Ohhh yeah the good old days
