Hi
Has anyone used 296 yet in place of 4759, yet?
With the discontinued 4759, the burn rate is close to 296.
Gun is a Pedersoli Sharps in .45-70.
I normally use 22.5grs of 4759. Shoots great with 405gr lyman cast.
I have done a bit of research on substituting 296, but haven't had much luck.
Looking for some input.
Thanks everyone

296 and H110 are not recomended for reduced loads. Better substitutes for SR4759 are Alliant #2400 or IMR4227. 4198 and RL7 require heavier charges, but also work well in the BP rifle cases. 44-40 and up.

5744 too but it burns too hot for me.

I gave up on 5744 also. RL7 or 4198 have given me great results, compressed caseful in the .44-40 rifles.

I have tried 4198 27grs i think it was.
I also tried 2400.
Think the 4198 shot better, but my eyes aren't as good as they used to be.
Thinking about going down a few grains, 25-24.5 4198 to see how they shoot.
Most of the shooting is done at 200yds.
Cheers

in the 45-70 I use 2400 and have had some good luck.
but I tend to use 2400 in just about everything.

4198 is one of those powders I have on hand but haven't mucked about with too much, it did look good in the initial trials in my 32 Winchester so i'll get back to working with it there before trying it elsewhere.

I did try some H-110 in some 30-06 loads a while back and compared it to aa-1680, the 1680 was a bit better load and used a bit more powder [probably why it worked better] but they done nothing the 2400 didn't and used more powder to do so.

I use 28gr of 4198 behind all bullet weights in 45 70 300gr to 525gr. I've tried other powders/loads but found nothiing better.

Burn rate is subjective and doesn't mean you can substitute one for another. In the case of these two powders they couldn't not be any further apart in characteristics. 296 is a very fine ball powder that has a very narrow charge window and can't be downloaded. 4759 takes up a lot of space in the case and can be loaded from very light to full throttle. These particular powders are not interchangeable. Not to say you can't work up some loads. But it would not be on my list of powders to use.

Cheers!
That was the answer I was looking for, before something
BAD happened.

Hey Wallnutt, what kind of rifle are you shooting?
